• Perhaps several day old posts shouldn't automerge and not bump the thread

Next Update v7 4days is too much imho
oh yeah I think someone mentioned this when automerge was just implemented. It even automerges up to a week. I proposed automerges only work up to a 48 hours period, guess the suggestion wasn't accepted.
One suggestion is that it could be different depending on the sub-forum/category. A longer automerge timer could fit in more in some categories and not in others.
the only time i've ever need automerge is if i have a sudden second thought right after posting even then, on oldpunch i started manually adding the editline tag since doing it manually started making ratings on my posts disappear
It can be a per forum setting, but I feel like it should not be more than a few hours.
I really wouldn't see this widely used. Looks like more harm than help Sure like news threads because old news etc
Somewhat related, why not make the "Post Reply" button change what it says to "Post & Merge" or something like that? And if there time runs out it would revert to "Post Reply". That way there would be much fewer "RIP automerge" mistakes, since you know in advance whether your post will merge or not. There's a few edge cases to solve, but I think this will be nice.
You're browser might have to do constant checks to see if no one has posted between your new post time and initial page load. While somewhat not related, if you did this on vbulletin, you'd still have the thread you just posted in still marked as unread, since it doesn't count anything read when traversing from the newpost page
I said there were a few edge cases to solve, and this is one of them. I think that garry can choose to handle them however he likes.
The "post & merge" button could simply be hardcoded to append to your last post instead of creating a new post and waiting for it to merge.
Okay - posts only automerge if posted less than an hour since the last one.
