On the old forum if you opened an image in a new tab it wouldn't direct download it. This was great because this was always how I copied the URL. Now I have to right click and click 'Copy Link Address' and feel sorry for whoever clicks the link. I'd rather upload it to Imgur and copy that link than force someone to download it.
Example image:
i think it's to stop people from using facepunch as an image host
It probably got overlooked since it's simply a matter of adding
target="_blank"
to <a> tag.
Can't you still embed images from facepunch on other sites anyway though?
It really doesn't stop you from using FP as a image host.
Either this, or usually you want links to open externally.
But this is really a matter of opinion.
It'd be good to have a setting to choose whether images just appear or whether they come in some sort of spoiler tag.
On the topic; I think it would be wise to restrict direct file uploads until you are rank 2 or 3, so that people don't abuse it by signing up just to upload files for free without otherwise contributing to the community (and so that trolls don't mess things up on purpose and upload illegal content on FP's servers).
I'm pretty sure Garry can make it so that images aren't externally approachable for other websites so that kind of makes it so that FP can't be used as an image host right?
Maybe they could, but I'd honestly like to be able to link to FP direct uploads on other sites within reason. Not that I intend to for any particular reason right now, but in principle, it would be useful (unless, of course, the hotlinking ate up too many resources for FP or otherwise cost too much).
I think the approach of blocking off direct image uploads until you reach a low level (like 2 or 3) would work better, as contributing members of the community would get an extra perk while it would prevent people from signing up just to use FP as an imgur alternative.
Uploads don't appear to have corrent Mime types
bumping because this is still an issue
It might be an issue for old images, but new images should work fine?

Any specific reason why old images can't be fixed?
Lack of motivation, time
Perhaps if you open source parts of this forum, you'll be able to advance at a much faster rate, eventually leading to just reviewing code and features that other people propose.
Seeing the size of FP's community, finding codemonkeys volunteers isn't gonna be hard. Maybe even give coins as a silly pointless reward
If you follow this path, and do the initial not-that-easy-of-an-effort of splitting your code, then it would benefit enormously in the future.
