• Been using Gamemaker. I want to transfer to Java (NetBeans for a Game?)

I've been on the bottle for quite a while I need to get into java though for this future project. I plan for this game to grow to the size of G-Mod. I want people on macs to be able to play with people on windows, that's why I'm learning Java. Plus with java you can have browser games. I'm choosing NetBeans as my IDE to get into. I also need a good project list to help me get use to java, I think I can just look this up online though, at least for my first hello world. my experience: PHP HTML JavaScript (i know they aren't the same thing... but I have a feeling they are related some how other than name) GameMaker (GML ... not drag and drop) A little bit of Java (I forgot how to make a program and class from scratch) ( i vaguely remember, classes, and then something that aren't classes, but like them...) A little bit of C++ ( I forgot how to make a program and class from scratch) Alright, that's it. Let's do this. So just to be clear. Netbeans is not bad right? and sample projects with very little code would also be useful. I think I might make a txt adventure game first.
Don't expect your game to just boom to a succes like gmod. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline] Also for IDE you should use Eclipse.
I didn't expect a boom... just a slow rise. I didn't know Gmod boomed either. Thanks for the advice on both points. edit:---------- you said "I should use Eclipse" I assume you meant to refer to me.
So, what about your game, what's your plans.
you said "I should use Eclipse" I assume you meant to refer to me.
No, he talked to the other zero people in this thread.
No, he talked to the other zero people in this thread.
Wow you're mean!
So, what about your game, what's your plans.
The plan is to make it like Mugen but with an easier fighter maker. The rest of the features to the game are critical to its success and I'd rather not share them. I've made popular games in the past, & as much as my social instincts drive me to, I'm not going to prove the potential popularity of my game by sharing my ideas. If my game sucks, let it suck and then laugh, because I need to humility anyway. The focus of this thread is to just get started with java. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline] I suppose knowing how to make a fighter in mugen would help me gain the advantage over my competition >.> I have never done it before
Can you give me a link of a "popular" game you made?
Can you give me a link of a "popular" game you made?
I'll PM it to you. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline] sent
I'm also interested in trying a good game. :) Link to your game(s)? PS, I don't know Java, but good luck, brother.
Yeah. You should just link it. ...or at least upload a screenshot.
I'll PM it to you. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline] sent
I would like to check out your "Popular" games too. Link me :) [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] Well I used Eclipse IDE for Java. For learning Java.
When I learned Java in my Grade 12 computer programming class we used NetBeans. Our final project was a game, but most of them (especially mine) sucked due to time constraints. NetBeans is a fine IDE, granted I've never really used others, but it'll catch errors for you before you even compile/run the code, it'll catch it as you're typing. It also flags warnings for you, such as unused imports and others I can't quite remember. It's a pretty user friendly IDE, and Java ain't all that hard to learn if you know something else. Personally, I'm trying to re-teach (haven't used Java in over a year) myself Java on NetBeans.
If you use Eclipse IDE - It'll tell you too about the errors as you type.
I heard that with eclipse there are a lot of "things" that one must manually install for games. I figure that if I want to be some kind of demi-god programmer, I'll have to get on that sometime; I'll have to understand things on the more fundamental levels
What? No.. You have to install libraries with any IDE you get.

Codalicious furgalicious [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] Also I think i was writing an example
This is pretty much a standard feature in IDEs.
I've seen some really shitty ones around the school board that don't, and I'd swear WindRiver C++ wouldn't, but that may just be due to the fact that I only ever used it for FIRST robotics, or I can't remember correctly because I only used it for a month over a year ago.
I'm pretty sure Blk meant good IDEs.
My IDEs don't have that. CodeBlocks and Vim
I want people on macs to be able to play with people on windows, that's why I'm learning Java.
So can C++ and C#

Preferring java because it works on all platforms is saying you prefer anal sex because it works on all genders

Whats wrong with java being cross platform and its not good to like it because of that? I thought this random java bandwagon bashing was over with by now.
Whats wrong with java being cross platform and its not good to like it because of that? I thought this random java bandwagon bashing was over with by now.
Why the disagree? With C++ and C# being a windows mac language?
C# isn't native to mac
C# isn't native to mac
Neither is java
Preferring java because it works on all platforms is saying you prefer anal sex because it works on all genders
Sex is different than a program being cross-platform. With sex, people generally have preferences and limitations. With software, a lot of times the goal is to sell as many copies as possible, which means that you need to remove as many of those preferences and limitations as possible to sell your program to the largest possible audience.
