Hey guys i'm thinking about making a game on my own but i'm not sure how to start and where to start because i'm not sure what software i should use to code and what program to use for this. I want to make a game like Terraria just a simple 2D block platform game i'd love to know what they used to make the game as they are independent witch means they didnt have alot of money to use on the making of the game or no money at all I dont have any money witch means i will have to use a free way of coding and game making if anyone knows how to do this kind of stuff please comment and help me out. I'd appreciate it. :)
Programming is free. It's hard work though.
Programming is free. It's hard work though.
I don't know where to start though and what i should use Java or Notepad or what. I am also not sure on how to code a game like Terraria even though the game looks quite basic and simple with the fact that its just a 2D block smashing game.
Um, start with making sprites, Luke blocks, and then sounds and stuff, then actually code. Learn how to E2 code in gnostic and u will see lua comes like a third hand to you. I don't know Luanda, but I know e2, and I know Luanda is similar to e2.

Then spend another few months making the game prototype. Then spend another few buying artwork.

[editline]16th February 2012[/editline] So i should start with C# or Notepad++ I'm new to this so i want one i will be able to learn from and won't be to hard to start off with.
Is Python a way of coding or a program i'v heard of C# before though is that the basics for beginners like me?
Python and C# are both programming languages.
If you want to learn C# you could try and follow the http://rbwhitaker.wikidot.com/xna-tutorials Crash Course tutorials, and after you know some C# try the other ones, this is for C# + XNA though, but you can make some pretty cool stuff with it.
Witch would be better for a new person like me?
I don't think any of them provide a spell check.
You need a language, a compiler or interpreter for that language, and an IDE or a text editor. You need to choose the language before we can recommend the tools. I like to recommend Python as a starting language. You can get the interpreter from python.org, and you can use the built-in editor (IDLE) or any text editor of your choice. If you want to do games in Python, you'll need libraries or a framework to do the graphics/input/sound, like PyGame.

Thanks. [editline]16th February 2012[/editline] Do you think that i should start with something simple such as Tetris or something even more simple?
Using notepad++ , it corrects you if there is a false execution or sumtin. Noyepad plus plus is much better in my opinion
Using notepad++ , it corrects you if there is a false execution or sumtin. Noyepad plus plus is much better in my opinion
Do you know anywhere where i could get some tutorials on basic coding in notepad?
Thanks. [editline]16th February 2012[/editline] Do you think that i should start with something simple such as Tetris or something even more simple?
Definitely. Start with small simple games, like Pong, Snake, Tetris, Asteroids, and mazes for example. Once you get a good grasp of game programming you can move on.
Do you know anywhere where i could get some tutorials on basic coding in notepad?
Yes! There is a "spoonfeed" tutorial series on youyube for notepadd plus plus and some coding with it! U will really like it, I promise. <3

Will anyone be willing to help me start with the basics by teaching me on skype? Its just better to talk on than flooding the thread if anyone will help me with Notepad coding please add me Donald.1998 and thanks to every one who has commented at told me about C#,python and other ways of coding! :D [editline]16th February 2012[/editline]
Yes!
the point of my post was to bring attention to his poor spelling and sentence structure you can't take someone seriously when they tell you they want to remake "terraira" ... or they use "witch" in place of "which"
yes, who's up for teaching a 14 year old how to coed in the notepad and make the terraira
Gotta agree with that :D In all seriousness, however, to learn the basics of programming I would suggest python, and then moving up to something more advanced (not a scripting language) like C# (so you can use XNA), or java. If you want to go pro there are always existing game engines, such as Unreal, which has it's own development kit (UDK), which you can easily-ish create a game with. A lot of the dirty work being done in Unreal Script.
wait, what language did you decide on? Python or C#?
Thanks. [editline]16th February 2012[/editline] Do you think that i should start with something simple such as Tetris or something even more simple?
Much, MUCH smaller, and then even smaller. Baby steps. EDIT: And my vote goes to http://love2d.org/ LOVE is a lua game engine and is pretty darn good for beginners, also http://lua.org has a free book about lua, both are free so if you don't want to buy a book on python or C# (Ignore this if python has their own free book) link to the book on lua: http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/
Notepad++ isn't a great idea IMO unless you want to get experience compiling everything by command line, which simply adds another step into building your program where things can go wrong. Unless you are using python, which is interpreted so you don't need a compiler, in which case feel free.
Since nobody really said it, Notepad++ isn't a language. Its just a text editor with syntax highlighting and a bunch of other useful things. Start with whatever you want really. But don't expect to be making Terraria anytime soon. It may seem like a simple block based game, but theres much much more going on on the inside.

[editline]16th February 2012[/editline]
Actually it would make a difference if you asked because you wouldn't get any help with that attitude.

No, your arrogance is not helping him learn in fact it may actually hinder him from learning, I cannot take you seriously when you make stupid remarks, he wants to make a game that uses a system very similar to Terraria, all things that have been created in the computer world was inspired by another and was in attempt to make something better than it currently is.
