So I have no issue admitting that I completely fail at making any sort of game engine for a 2d mmorpg. I did stumble upon one called eclipse engine. I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with it and other's opinions on it.
http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/eclipse/
I really do want to make one though I haven't quite decided if I want to use the 2d eclipse engine or else use the 3d realmcrafter engine (I would actually pay for it).
http://www.realmcrafter.com
The eclipse engine id fully free for both small use and commercial use as long as you make your game F2P. But Runecrafter is $100usd per copy of the software for the standard edition. I'd love to get the professional edition as it is better and in development but its 65 bucks more than I already wish to spend.
Constructive criticism will be highly appreciated. Any others, well, just bugger off.
Don't try to make a MMO, it will never take off and you are wasting your time.
Even if you try to make one, eclipse is utter crap.

Any reasoning behind why it won't take off and how I am wasting my time? Because if I am, the people that thought of making WoW, EVE, and all the other MMO's must be wasting there time cause they obviously arent taking off.
P.S. I asked for constructive criticism, telling someone they are wasting their time is not constructive, its opinionated. Describing a better engine to use would be constructive.
I am sorry to interupt, but he is giving advise.
There is actually no need for this to become a fight because no one said bad things about eachother.
Also, advise: (hehe)
When you start threads like these you should be prepared for criticism
criticism can be bad
But if it is bad, it doesn't need to be meant insulting
I recommend XNA (and c#) for small 2d things but I don't know for big things. They always make engines themselves.

He's just poorly paraphrasing an article that was posted a long while ago.
You'll find that if you hang out here long enough, 90% of the crazy stuff people say is plagiarized from some terrible article/post a bored person wrote one day.
I remember when every ten seconds it was "DON'T MAKE ENGINES, MAKE GAMES", which is an excellent example of something that may be good advice, but quickly becomes perfectly useless when people start arguing about it.
i played game made wit playuerworlds, it was same but bit worse, this game was rly gd but max it had like 40 regulr ppl. the reson u wuld be wasting time is cos eclipse, while prop top for 2d tile games, is not rly that good and ud be limited lots. but if u relly wanna do one, this is prob the way. cos u dont need any prof. skills 2 do it, at max u will need to do sum scripting

Took me a whole 5 minutes to read this comedy gold.
Also, I wouldn't use a premade MMO engine. You'd be better off making your own if you really want to be creative. Or else it's going to be just like another MMO running the same engine.
you should try rpg maker

Well, I ended up just going with the runecrafter program. As for rpg maker, it wasn't what I was looking for. it was the same exact thing as eclipse but it costs money. As for what you said about engines, when you think about it, how many games use the same engine. Example, many games use the unreal engine and they are different companies. But thanks for the advice.

Unreal is not an MMO engine. It's a whole entire game SDK. Other companies pay for a license to use Unreal3 commercially. Also, I was not serious about using RPG Maker, since that would be a contradiction to what I previously said.
I believe a mayor prerequisite to making an MMO is actually knowing what the hell you're doing. It may be hars, but it's the truth. If you want some actual advice: get to know a bot of programming, learn how game development works and join a mod team or such.
Right now you're just making a fool off of yourself and making sure no one wants to be your friend. Ever. You don't want to become like me. It's not fun, at all :(.

"The people that", exactly! They're companies that have competent staff that make their living on development and support of a product. Do you really think that you, as a single individual, will be able to do the same as these companies can provide?

Especially if you need to post a question like this, and you are considering Eclipse engine.
But learning from experience is the best way to learn. Go for it, and when you fail (you fail will, and its not a reflection off your abilities) you'll be able to tell other people who want to try it to not to try it(like we're doing) and will get ignored(like you're doing to us). Then you'll learn that people don't really listen to others advice when they're feeling really optimistic and that trying to give them advice is a waste of time, which is why I didn't put much effort into this post and there are probably plenty of grammatical errors.
ps. I've attempted to make 2 mmos. They've all failed at the open beta stage: Smiley online, and Ralios. Look em up if you want (you probably wont find the first one tho)

Not to be rude, but can you please show me the part where I said I want or am trying to compete with bigger companies? Because I know for a fact that I never said I did because I'm not trying to.

1. Could not find either of those games
2. I have been reading and taking what most of the people here have been saying and taking it into consideration. However, yes, I am blowing you all off :) I am going to go through with this stuff anyway. I do expect everything to fail and just come to a complete halt, but as you have said, It will give me experience from it which is partially what I am looking for. Although, something I disagree with you though is saying that I would then tell others not to do it. I would definitely tell them to go through with it because first, they might not make mistakes that I have done and are able to push out a really good game and second, you should encourage others to try to do something others say they can't. If they fail, they fail and they learn something.

The first one is kinda hard to find since it really only had a lifetime of about a week until I gave up on it

You don't know how much it sucks to have to give up on something you've worked on for months. Makes you not want to work on anything else for a while. Completing a game is probably the most rewarding experience a developer can have, even if the game doesn't become successful.
If someone asked me whether they should invest their time in a doomed MMO or in a simple platformer I would tell them to do the platformer.
There are so many spelling/grammar mistakes in this thread that my head may implode.
Edit: This is my 666th post, you're all going to hell.

I apologize for the grammatical errors.
Eclipse is good, the next best from Notepad++.

The IDE is amazing.
Uh, Realmcrafter? Seriously? It's the same The Game Creators bullshit I dislike. No seriously, they are making you pay alot for "game" makers that do so little and are limited and outdated.
I'm using Indigo in my Mobile App development course, pretty nice so far. Especially for the android stuff we're doing.

except it's pretty obvious that the people making wow and eve have large, experienced teams
you are not a large, experienced team
