Well I have had this idea for quite sometime but have not had any time to really further think about it
because of school and want to discuss whether this could be successful or worth pursuing.
What this is:
Although a name has not been picked yet, it would be a very simple site for enthusiast to professional level
programmers alike to show off a project they are working on with it's own profile including one per user.
Although many similar sites like this exist, mine would employ the following worthy features:
- Not business related, Although it could possibly lead to future jobs, the main goal here is to
have fun and make something you would like to show off to others or show off and make your e-penis larger :D).
This is important as it encourages more creativity and a wider range of types of projects.
- Simplicity. Although a very often clichéd idea, this would be the founding core of the whole site.
For the curious user a typical session could involve looking in a category of interest
(browse by language or type of project) looking for and finding a project that really interests them, getting more info and possibly joining.
Two different paths or Pursuing Both:
- Buildup of personal credibility. Upon completing a project you are given a rating by others within the project.
If you do a good job your score will increase and make your profile stand out.
From here you can apply for other more ambitious projects which upon being admitted you can further your profiles popularity.
- Buildup of a project's popularity. You join the site to display and advertise your project to further its
popularity within the community. Some of the best and most original ideas will be featured to help get your idea out to the masses.
- Heavy moderation. This is to ensure that only serious projects will be added on the site
(i.e. spam, inappropriate ideas, dead projects that never went anywhere etc.) - Thanks Benjy355 for the idea
Note: This is an important aspect as it needs to seem rewarding to the end user (e.g. Why else would they want to come here?)
Note: This may be a stupid idea but the nonetheless I would love to hear your opinions (praise, criticism) for it.
Also, I am not here to get people to work for me. (i.e. Hey guys I have an idea now make it happen for me while I do nothing)
Although if the idea picks up more enthusiasm I will be looking to pay a web developer to co-develop this with me to break it
past the prototype stage and into production mode faster.
Thanks!
This would have to be heavily moderated by both the community and site staff. Neat idea though.
(I have quite the bit of experience with PHP, HTML, and Ajax. FYI)

Great suggestion, really didn't think of that.
I am most likely going to use cakePHP but maybe RoR if I ever get the hang of it. (have any other previous works to show?)
Thanks for reading.
Great ideas.
I host my stuff on Github, which for storage is nice, but they have a really terrible discovery system. It's really hard to find cool projects (even if they are all crappy web apps done in Ruby) on Github.
You either have to search for it, which basically means you have to know the name of the project, you can look at recent commits, or you can look at the "popular in X language" page which has several catagories and all dominated by the same three projects.
So really, if you can pull this off you can have something that nothing else really has. I'm not even sure if Sourceforge has something like this. Hope this works out.
Should actually have an interactive e-penis that gets bigger as people rate your project and as you use the site.
On a serious note:
This would be good for developers because then they can get feedback from developers alike, the feedback would be more focused than the average user.
brb stealing ideas

Thanks for the feedback. I love the search ideas a lot :D
Yes in my opinion sourceforge's environment is too serious and not about having fun (not a bad thing but I want my site to be different)

The site's down atm (and not professionally hosted), but I worked on it with a friend of mine. This site made me dislike working with JS. (http://scsite.hopto.org:1337)
And of course, the lesser Roflbox...

Any idea when it will be up?
Anyways roflbox looks pretty good.
However as far as js goes I will be using JQuery. (if I can join)
Also, I have web server to be put to use if needed.

That would be nice.

Wow I'm impressed. What all did you design? (html, server side)?
Look very nice. Exactly what I'm looking for in a clean looking site with an excellent ui.
You are going to definitely be considered for the project (in that the initial idea is not a flop... but things are looking good). I am really just stuck for a name though.

Gotta ask. How on earth were you that fast on finding that?
Impressive.

I've used that template for a site of my own once.

Yeah I only did server-side, and javascript.

Ah gotcha, that would definitely be an area I would need help with the most (not for lack of skill but to speed up dev time) You work with frameworks at all? (serverside and js)
Uhh, we made a custom framework, and worked with templatelite mostly.

Ever use cakephp?
Ever use cakephp?
That is what I plan to use.
I have never used cakephp. But it's always fun to learn new things :D

It's a great framework.
