Hey there, I need a little bit of help.
I'm starting up using Flash, and I have an SWF file where I just want to edit some text and maybe change the layout a little bit. My dad has Adobe Flash CS4 on his computer, but obviously the SWF file isn't editable in the way I want it. Do I need an AS file or a FLA file to actually change the text around and all that, like what do I have to do or what do I need to be able to just edit this flash website.

Yes
ok so I've decompiled the SWF, I'm looking at it in Adobe Flash CS4, this shit is confusing, I just want to change some text...
learn flash then instead of decompiling other peoples shit?
1) Don't decompile other people's work
2) :google: 'Adobe Flash CS4 Tutorial'
3) AS = Action Script
FLA = File that has the timeline and everything else
Haha no, no guys that's not how it is. My dad told his company that I could update their website since I'm very experienced in PHP and HTML (I've done paying work before), but the problem is that I didn't know the website was in Flash, and the guy who created the website is in Kingston and we have no way of contacting him for the original file. I'm not just randomly taking some guy's work and decompiling it for fun, this is serious business.

If you're doing this for a website then they should know to give you the fla. But I'm finding it hard to believe you with a name like Poo Monst3r

Oh thats alright then.
Lets illegally reverse engineer something then host it at the companies web address, because it's totally a good idea and there is no potential for a law suit :downs:
Get the fla, make the site from scratch or don't do it at all.

No, see the website and everything this mysterious man in Kingston did for it is property of the company, the company is giving me access to the entire website and its contents to simply update a few things for them.

Would the ActionScript have the plain text in it that I could change?
Well, if they gave you access to the entire website:
1 - Download the SWF.
2 - Decomplie it. (tell them they forgot to give you a .FLA)
3 - Edit it.
Now, this sounds easier than it is.
Why does it matter to you people whether or not he has the FLA or AS just help him....

Haha this is exactly where I'm at, I'm just not very experienced at all in Flash, so I don't know how to just edit some text. Like I don't know which layer the text is on, I don't know how to get to it, etc. I feel like it's something simple, I'm just not sure how I do it. I've Googled tutorials, but there's nothing relevant to what I need to do. Is there any way I can ask you guys for help without needing a massively long explanation of Flash? Like can I just get a point in the right direction on how to find the text I need to edit inside this jumble of layers and animations?
Decompiling it usually fucks those things up anyway. Just contact him, you're hopeless.
Who the FUCK makes a whole website in flash?

are you blind?

You must be blind, because now you posted a link that answers your own question twice.
If you decompile, you maybe able to make some minor changes to the file, but it is impossible to work on it.

He can make the changes, but he won't be able to compile it back again. It's impossible to do with these many animations, events etc. Flash decompilers aren't THAT good, unless you know what you're doing and can pick pieces of code out from it, and then reuse it.
OK - We managed to contact the original creator, he's currently busy in another project, but he sent over the FLA, and now I just need to edit this shit. Fuck.
[editline]05:15PM[/editline]
There's a layer called pages which I'm pretty sure holds the shit I need to edit, but I can't really see the text or anything. If anyone can help me out with this shit send me a PM. It would be very much appreciated.
