Making a background span across multiple columns?

I have a project to do for my web design class, and I have 5 images going across 5 columns in a table. I need a way to make a background image span across all 5 columns. Is this possible?

Do you want it to span across the whole table? Or do you have other columns where you don't want the background image to show?

If you want it across the whole table, set the image on the <table> element.
