This thread is to talk about any and all versions of Game Maker. Some questions to get us started. 1. I'm using game maker studio what are you using? 2. Do you use gml or drag and drop? 3. Why do you like or hate game maker? 4. Are you looking forward to anything in game makers future? Thread Highlights:
Vilusia really likes balls. [thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36159879/genning.gif[/thumb] Tovip made duck simulator 2k13 [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/EFxauAL.gifhttp://i.imgur.com/EFxauAL.gif[/thumb]
I'm working on Break'um, a randomly generated brick breaking game. Here is an example of the random level generation. Soon I will be adding random blocks that will actually make random power ups. This will save me the trouble of making a bunch. 1. I'm using game maker studio what are you using? I'm using studio as well but I have the standard license! :D 2. Do you use gml or drag and drop? I use a mix of both, but each day I find myself using gml more and more. 3. Why do you like or hate game maker? I like GM because it's great for beginners. A week ago I could literally do nothing I'm doing right now. 4. Are you looking forward to anything in game makers future? Nothing really.
For the people using this software, how has it benefited you in terms of learning about programming?
For the people using this software, how has it benefited you in terms of learning about programming?
Game Maker benefited me from the beginning because all the simple tutorials and resources, its community really helped me out when I was learning. Since then I have loved it because its easy to learn the basics but it also has higher level programming aspects with this I can write and understand my own code without getting confused and also work on art witch is more of my territory. Personally I believe game maker is for people with great ideas and talented artist but who have basic programming skills. Now that I have been working with game maker for 4 years I can say my programming skills have improved greatly but game maker isnt for everyone.
I use Game Maker 8.0 as of right now. I registered my copy of gm studio thanks to the free gm studio standard promotion, and I plan to start using it soon. I am using GML more and more thanks to my W.I.P. game ( http://www.bzpower.com/board/index.php?showtopic=11094 ) and I hope I get better and better at sprite/background making.

Going to have to check it out when I get home tomorrow.
Recently started using gamemaker and I am really liking it so far! I will post my game once it becomes worth posting.
I got started in programming with Game Maker, back in about '05. It's excellent to get started, to be honest, because it's so easy it keeps you motivated. You can learn D&D and--at your own pace--move into GML. GML lacks some features to be desired, and doesn't enforce good programming habits, but it's meant to be easy and teach you logic. I would recommend anyone to start with Game Maker because if you don't have the patience for something as easy as D&D then you don't have the patience for programming in general. The only problem with it these days is the price tag.
I'm working on Break'um, a randomly generated brick breaking game. Here is an example of the random level generation. I use good old gm7, and I still have no issues with it. I absolutely HATE the fact yoyogames turned it into a monetization scheme, as a learning tool that runs SLOWER than java need not cost 50+.

Game maker is slower than most snails, and my screenshot is a pretty good indication of that. Also an engine should not start running slow when it has in memory 3000 empty instances.
I use good old gm7...that runs SLOWER than java need not cost 50+.
Doesn't the newer versions run faster? I dropped off after GM8 but I heard they were making good progress with compiled code of some sort.
I absolutely HATE the fact yoyogames turned it into a monetization scheme
I don't think that Game Maker would be relevant today if they hadn't. Game Maker was a nice tool for its time, but there are so many alternatives out there nowadays that it has to compete. The price tag is fairly reasonable for a studio making mobile games.
I've been using game maker since I was 11 back in 2004 1. I'm using game maker studio what are you using? Gamemaker 8, I learnt game maker in GM5 and it 8 is the last familiar version to me. 2. Do you use gml or drag and drop? GML, drag and drop never got me anywhere but creating huge messes of work. 3. Why do you like or hate game maker? I like it because it was easy to learn and it hasn't wronged me yet. There hasn't been a game idea I've wanted to make that I haven't been able to make. Showcase: FCO: One of my ventures into network programming, it was an online game capable of supporting around 50 players (on the server I was running, could have been higher if I had a more powerful setup). I shut down the server around February 2009 and have been hoping to reboot the original community and start a new game. Players could fight monsters to grind levels and loot (hats and weapons), or fight players in PvP mode. It wasn't really balanced at all but I hadn't played many RPGs back when I made it. Don't have any action shots of it, but here is some of the core community sitting around after a large update. Nazi Zombies 2D: Made in a few months as a final project for my software development class in high school. A 2D demake of the Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies mode, it was going to feature 4 player online co-op and remakes of all the nazi zombie maps and extras. I ran into some complications with messy code and decided to put it aside at the start of 2012. INK: A 2D platformer MOBA inspired by LoL and Awesomnauts. Started development with a friend in late 2011, it is currently in my maybe pile. An unnamed RPG: A grid based RPG inspired by the original fallout games. I lost the source code for it a few years ago when I was moving and was devastated. Another unnamed RPG: A 4 player Coop RPG to be played over a local network (or internet), similar to the early final fantasy games and inspired by my lost RPG. Currently in my maybe pile. I used to use Game Maker 6 and 7 and I have a license for 8, but I started practicing other languages because Game Maker felt too limited, even the pro versions. It was probably for the best. My habits improved dramatically after I learned C++ and Lua. [editline]3rd December 2013[/editline] My projects weren't that great, but they were fun to work on. Nevertheless, I hope they stay in the dark for a very long time.
can we just make this a general game development software thread [editline]a[/editline] fine jeez
Is the code editor still terrible? I used 6, 7, and 8 a lot. But I kinda lost interest around HTML5. Also, I have a ton of screenshots of games that I've made of you want them.

If you pardon the pony, my friend made this in Game Maker: http://rafika.com/uploads/TAOPP/index.html
Oh god, back then? :v: Either JA-LB or BaldEagle636.
Yeah I remember you very well. Stick online has recently reopened it's server to the public, I played it until 3 am last night waiting for Starbound to come out.
Game Maker is what got me into programming waaaaay back. My old username on the GMC was, wait for it, -0NL1N3-. Props to anyone who ever saw or used my shitty networking "engine" :v:
I present to you.... Random Power up generation!
I present to you.... Random Power up generation!
There needs to be a way to tell what will happen on impact, maybe a colour variation.
I don't see how I would be able to do that.. I'll look into it.
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/KJo8rRih.png[/thumb] Lalalala art is fun.
Being fairly new to programming, I've found GameMaker a joy to work with. There are times where I curse at Yoyogames for removing vital functions (object_set_parent & screen_redraw, I'm looking at you!) and usually without warning or a reason as to why, but it's manageable and I can usually find a workaround on my own. I'm currently working on a 2D topdown shooter that's inspired by Deus Ex, e.g. multiple ways to handle a situation. I've got some 2 months old random pictures: http://imgur.com/a/tlYDH#0
Just got game maker studio pro! First project in pro
