And this year I'm doing IT. I'm sure programming is bound to show up, I know that the Year 11/12 students program in flash and other languages (I'm not sure which ones though). I want to know though, what programming language is good to start on, where can I get good Tutorials. It also needs to be something that would probably show up in class
Maybe start on python, or php. They are both very documented.
That's what this thread is for: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=700269
Holy shit you do programming in IT in year 11 and 12? Lucky. We do IT in my school but it is just Microsoft office.
Im in year 10 this year, but yes they do. My school gets all the best stuff. We are in the top State Schools in AUs
their reading classes must be bad. cause you kind of missed the sticky
Let's not talk about your writing classes then...
Let's not talk about your writing classes then...
Oh I'm sorry, would you like it if I talked like this?
Year 10 has to use flash during web design. No programming though.
Why does everyone want to preempt their programming classes?
Oh I'm sorry, would you like it if I talked like this?
Yes, actually.
I don't know if it will suite you best but that's how I learned... I first started learns procedural programming (QBasic, TiBasic, VB 6) and then I started looking at OOP with C++. I find it a good way to learn but basic might not be the best. I would learn C first and then go with C++. From there you'll know all the basis and logic. After that it's all about learning other syntaxes (easy when you saw Cs) and Further learning algorithms and and logic and all sorts of techniques. You gotta remember that that coding is all about the logic and the algorithms. Languages are just a tool. The important thing is not the code itself but what goes behind it...
I would learn C first and then go with C++.
Don't be silly. C is just C++ without OOP and it is slightly different. The only thing learning C will do for you before learning C++ is cause bad habits.
Why does everyone want to preempt their programming classes?
So they can be super cool and get all the chicks.
So they can be super cool and get all the chicks.
Then why don't they *drop* their programming classes?
Then why don't they *drop* their programming classes?
Either that was unnecessary, or you failed to pick up on the sarcasm.
Either that was unnecessary, or you failed to pick up on the sarcasm.
Little bit of both.
Not sure where OP is from, but if you're from the UK, you're in trouble. Here in the UK, IT classes at years 10/11 are a joke. Infact, most sixth form IT classes are a joke. I'm doing the AQA AS Computing course, and that's just about passable. At GCSE, you won't be doing much, if anything, at max it'll be a tiny bit of actionscript, and in 12/13, the "IT" courses are dribble, try to get on a computing course.
I'd suggest learning some C. Yes, it's old, yes it isn't used a lot anymore, but it's basic, and knowing it would make it easier to advance to C++. In my IT class we started learning C# from year 10.
lol you guys are making my school sound like shit closest thing we get to programming is pivot stickman
and knowing it would make it easier to advance to C++.
Nah, not really.
All the people saying that knowing C will make C++ easier must not know proper C++.... because it's the total opposite.
Sorry about big bump. I found out today we're doing Delphi. And there's nothing in the sticky about it.
I made my first bigger steps with Delphi :) It was made for GUI Applications though, so it wasn't to well with games. But whatever you want to program, it'll still teach you the way to think for coding ;)
Maybe ill learn delphi then move on. Maybe LUA and Gmod
Sorry about big bump. I found out today we're doing Delphi. And there's nothing in the sticky about it.
Well the sticky orients you towards what I and some others consider the most logical choices for certain areas of programming, and since Delphi is getting old I don't recommend it. That said, any programming skills you learn can generally be applied to other languages, so pay attention anyway. That, and the ability to work on a problem, imagine a solution and then implement it, are invaluable skills that apply anywhere.
Maybe ill learn delphi then move on. Maybe LUA and Gmod
Delphi is a pretty decent language, but it's getting pretty ancient and isn't a very beginner friendly language (in terms of setting up). A better choice might be trying out C#, Java or VB.NET.
I dont get a choice what we do at school. I'm stuck with Delphi. Whats something thats similar yet newer?
