Growing Internet Trees - An Interactive Website I made
4 replies, posted
Hi, I've been lurking in this section for quite some time (I usually post in the screenshot section) and I finally thought about making a thread here to share an interesting interactive site I've built.
[B]So what's the site and what does it do?[/B]
[B]Here's the site[/B] : [URL="http://www.wduwant.com"]www.wduwant.com[/URL] -> click on the "grow a tree" part to see how it works.

What does it do?[/B]
It allows a person to centralize a bunch of URL links, images, and videos, into one URL link, and to do it in a creative way by planting these URL links into tree branches which look something like this:

There is an infinite variety of permutations and colors with which one can paint the tree branches. If you paste a link with an image file ending, it pastes the image, if you paste a youtube video, it loads a youtube image, whereby when you click on it, it plays the video, and if you upload an image by clicking "upload a pic" it also provides you a URL link to that specific image when you load your image into the tree.
I preloaded the tree with an example of a series of images that one can grow in the tree if you click on the "upload a pic" button so that one can get an idea of the kinds of branches one can create.
Also, if you type in "test" at the beginning of your tree, it will throw out a tutorial explaining all the stuff you can do!

Here's an example of a tree link i created for some of the Garry's mod stuff I did (pictures, gifs, comics), you can visit the tree directly at : [URL]http://www.wduwant.com/prototype/tree/ef68fa195.php[/URL]

^ that's how it looks like and, by interacting with the branches using your mouse & mousewheel (you can use it to scroll through the tree), that's what it does!
Feel free to create a tree of your own and if you're using mozilla or safari, is the animation, tree dragging laggy for you? I tried to make it browser compatible for msie, chrome, mozilla, and safari.
Oh, and another site feature is that one can also upload pics on the same page (up to 8 mb) on the front page. I mainly made that for the gmod screenshot section since people had problems with images loading too slow/pictures going down/stuff getting lost. The upload feature also provides an outline of the 9 most frequently used colors and an instant img tag:

I drew the tree logo on the index page using black ink by the way, an inverted version of it is one of the image examples available under "upload a pic" when you create a tree.
I built this using a combo of jquery, ajax, some old js libraries, and php. When one clicks on "grow a tree," it creates a unique page where one can build this tree construct, which is then saved into a json style format. Please tell me if you run into any problems, see things that need improvement, and tell me how well I did on the interactive tutorial!
Thanks for reading and feel free to leave a message about what you think of the site.
Holy fuck, this looks amazing.
You are very good.
Shit man. You know what you're doing. Keep it up :P
Interesting idea, but I'm curious how much value the tree structure provides vs more traditional bookmarking/collection tools.
It'd be interesting seeing an import bookmarks function.
