While this sub-forum isn't exactly empty, it never hurts to spice things up a bit with some friendly competition. The plan is to hold a series of simple challenges on various aspects of web-design/development and anything else that applies, providing a medium for experimentation, creativity, sharing of knowledge and, hopefully, alot of fun. Notes: - Due to the nature of this medium, Javascript, HTML and CSS knowledge will be expected on most/all competitions, however, you are free to use your server-side language of choice. - Frameworks are allowed unless otherwise stated, but count towards total filesize, if the challenge requires it. - You are not forced to release server-side code. - You submit your entry by replying to this topic with a link to it. While not mandatory, I'm sure we'll all appreciate it if you include some details on your methods, choices, and anything that may be of interest. Judging Criteria: - Design - Ease-of-use - Standarts-compliance - Cross-browser compatibility - Filesize, page-load speed. - Perceived execution speed on server-side code. - Accessibility. Deciding the winner: - The winner of each challenge is the participant with the most "Winner" ratings when the deadline is reached. This method may not be permanent, but it certainly is ideal for allowing the community as a whole to vote. - Should a rule be broken by the chosen winner, the second participant with the most "Winner" ratings will be chosen, and so-on. This month's challenge is... ... to design a web-application for managing tasks. This can be something as simple as a TO-DO list that you can check elements out of, to something more complex such as schedule management. Data persistance is not mandatory, and clientside-only solutions are very welcome. Some of the points that will be most important for this challenge are.. - Design - Ease-of-use Note: This first challenge is kept simple on purpose as a way to put the concept to the test and weed out any major problems right from the start. Deadline: The deadline for this challenge is November 14th at midnight, GMT+0 (Lisbon, London, Dublin). The final rating count will be taken at some time during the 15th of November, and announced when possible. Participants are expected to have an online, running copy of their applications at this time. Good luck to all! If you have any questions, let me know here, or through a private message. Changelog Oct 26: Added 'Accessibility' to judging criteria. Oct 26: Goddamnit, imgur. Note: This topic is a work in progress, expect some changes in the next few hours.
I got this :buddy: Does the winner..win anything? :3
I got this :buddy: Does the winner..win anything? :3
Web Development forum fame and glory, the best gift a man can receive.
Way too busy in real life to do this, I would like to though, oh well.
Hmm, I might give this a shot. Throw in some real prizes, though :v:
Hmm, I might give this a shot. Throw in some real prizes, though :v:
Throw in some real money, then.
I'll throw in 5000 FP dollars (equivalent to 0 real dollars)
I think most people here are busy with other projects.
I want to see andersonmat finish this: for the competition.
I want to see andersonmat finish this: [img_thumb]http://anyhub.net/file/things_to_do.png[/img_thumb] for the competition.
oh damn, we've lost already.
does it specifically have to be for desktops or can be it an iOS webapp?
Yeah, I'd participate but I've got enough projects going on at the moment..
Do we need to work on a design ourself, or can we use another person's (e.g., one from themeforest) This is the Web Development Challenge, after all.
I don't think that's a good way for voting, but I'm going to join
Do we need to work on a design ourself, or can we use another person's (e.g., one from themeforest) This is the Web Development Challenge, after all.
That's not only up to me, but I'm fine with it, just mention it on your submission, and don't expect to be rated for the design, I guess.
I don't think that's a good way for voting, but I'm going to join
Always up for suggestions, this first contest is really just a proof of concept. Do you have any ideas?
Do we need to work on a design ourself, or can we use another person's (e.g., one from themeforest) This is the Web Development Challenge, after all.
I'll help you design if needed. I'm not so much a code guy anymore
I think that another thread should be created once the contest is ended with a poll, and people would vote for their favorite.
So..can it be an iOS/Mobile web app? :s
I want to see andersonmat finish this: [img_thumb]http://anyhub.net/file/things_to_do.png[/img_thumb] for the competition.
If only I had the time.
I think that another thread should be created once the contest is ended with a poll, and people would vote for their favorite.
I'm perfectly fine with that, I'll talk to a mod and see if we can do it.
Instead of doing a competition you guys should get together and do something that makes use of Facepunch's API and OpenID. Build something that helps users arrange meetups, that would be a well used application.
and where can we find the API?
and where can we find the API?
I need to fix it first :v:
Instead of doing a competition you guys should get together and do something that makes use of Facepunch's API
I am, if you'd hurry up and fix it. [editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
I need to fix it first :v:
Rated programming king for irony. Just make GMF and staff forums invisible for now until you can find a fix or something kthx. [editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
I don't think that's a good way for voting, but I'm going to join
Voting like this allows for people like TehWhale / Erp to just alt-vote like a crazy motherfucker.
Rated programming king for irony.
that's not irony
http://taskup.iamluke.co.uk/ Started working on this yesterday, still pretty basic but I'm the first submission so far, yay. Edit: On the dashboard page, you can drag the tasks in order of importance as well double clicking to edit them.
Need to make a high stakes, thousand dollar one. That will get people comin (like the fretta competition)
