Any suggestions at to writing pads and compilers that would be useful swell as any beginner tips and tutorials out there? Thanks guys!

Your subject line says JavaScript, but your post says Java. They're two completely different languages. And JavaScript isn't compiled.

For Java, Eclipse and NetBeans are the usual choices.
