Hello Web Development section,
I'm buying a domain for a website user ": awesome :"(creator of http://stickybomb.org, and http://tdoyle.me) built for my music project, and I wanna get it on the right website. I can get a Gandi.net domain or a GoDaddy, and the rates would be at:
GoDaddy: $10.69 a year ($6.89 with coupon)
or
Gandi: $15.00 a year.
(although if I go with Gandi I'm going to get the $30, for two years rate)
Is there any big difference? Or does Gandi just have a nicer website? Which one do you/would you use?
GoDaddy is meh from what I've seen.
It doesn't make a difference at the end of the day, although Gandi is much nicer in terms of features and aesthetics.
Gandi lets you very easily glue your own DNS servers, whereas I couldn't find that feature on GoDaddy.
Also, GoDaddy pushes shit at you left, right and center when purchasing from them. Gandi doesn't.
I would rather spend $5 more at Gandi simply for the nicer experience.
I have gotten 1 domain through godaddy and 2 through gandi and I must say that gandi was a much better experience. I think they are worth the extra few bucks

This thread reminds me about how ugly my websites are :saddowns:

^^ they got that right.
Also, compare and make up your own mind:

Ok, selected my domain and clicked next.

Your choice.
Also might sound silly but have you looked into name.com?
It would cost you $10.98 for a .com with whois privacy for one year with them and I highly suggest them for their service.
GoDaddy is terrible. I remember having them a while back. They use a custom cPanel, and the cPanel is on a remote site which is really slow, you can't just use "localhost" for mysql connections, they have another domain that always changes for that...
I really hated it.
You used them for hosting?
Ouch mang, I feel for you.
I use Dynadot, they're pretty good and cheap.

They don't use cPanel.
I use GoDaddy because:
- Very cheap when you use coupons
- I can put up with scrolling down a page and clicking "No thanks, continue"
- I've watched almost every episode of Bob Parsons' video blog D:
But tbh, it doesn't really matter where you buy domains. The product you get is pretty much exactly the same, and you're only going to be going back there once a year at most anyway (per domain).
I use http://name.com and my own DNS server, they've been really good so far, I have about 11 domains with them. Recently they started charging for DNS Privacy but you can just fake it and it's cool.
They don't use cPanel.
I know. They use a custom control panel.
Namecheap, I love them. Free SSL, free WHOISGuard, nicely priced, no bullshit and very easy to use even on a slightly crammed up site.
Thanks for the multitude of responses.. I'm going with Gandi.. Keep suggestion though, this thread might come in handy in the future.
gandi is master race
I like gandi and have about 3 domains registered with them, but i would probably use godaddy right now if i had to buy a domain. Very cheap prices, and they have been longtime sponsors of several podcasts that i watch/listen to.
I can get over clicking 'no thanks' a few times.
