• Seeking a Programming Partner

Alright, so I'm your average dude, with some (imo) good ideas about games. Fair enough. Unfortunately, I'm still failing utterly to grasp the concepts of programming altogether. So, I come to request any and all programmers. Not looking for anyone who's spectacular, just someone with average programming skill who's willing to ply his/her trade on a game that may or may not go anywhere at all. So here's my concept. It's a side-scrolling space-based RPG, on a massive scale (meaning one pixel is about twice the size of your average human). Obviously, this means the player is not really one person as much as he/she is controlling a ship and her crew. Here's where it gets wonky. Following the suit of Shadow of the Colossus, each "level" of the game will be it's own individual boss fight... and nothing else. The story arch will follow whatever the player does and where he/she decides to travel within the universe (or potentially even across alternate dimensions, depending on how ambitious you'd like to get). So, you begin the game in your home galaxy, and receive missions through local governments and/or friends, etc. Then, you take the missions in whatever order you like (certain missions will progress the plot, others will simply be filler), until finally you reach the very last boss fight, and win the game by destroying it. Since this is an RPG, you do get myriad chances to improve your ship by hiring skilled crew members and keeping certain materials handy, while of course getting better weaponry and armor/shielding along the way. This is, I admit, pretty ambitious a project. However, I'm fully prepared to carry through my end of the bargain (which I just realized I failed to mention before). I'll handle all/the majority of the graphics of the game. Here are some samples of my work: I tired to pick a selection from a variety of different spriting styles and such. Some of it I consider to be utter crap. Other stuff I'm sorta proud of. I tried not to discriminate my work too much, so that you guys see what I honestly make. Sorry, but that aint going to happen, at least not yet. Start small, make a few simple games and then maybe someone will want to team up with you. I mean at the very least you have to realize that tutoring you and and making this game aren't things that will happen concurrently.
I presumed the case was such, but it's worth a shot. I figure: why not?
I would, but I'm not a good programmer
I presumed the case was such, but it's worth a shot. I figure: why not?
Because of the probable shitstorm of abuse incoming; I was thinking of posting something like "Reach for the stars, little guy :D"
Displaying more of your graphics work might make people more interested. There are tons of game programmers out there looking for good artists (like me). Only drawback is that they probably have their own game ideas they want to work out :v:
@Clavus: I can see that being a problem, yeah. @ryandaniels: That would've made for a much more amusing post :) @raccoon12: Thanks?
But do post other (not necessarily related-to-this-project) stuff you made. If you want complete strangers to team up on a new project you need to show what you can do.
@raccoon12: Thanks?
np
I've updated the original post with a bunch of spritesheets... Hope that does it for you, Clavus. Or anyone else who shares his opinion. Edit: And, of course, none of the images appear to be working properly. Wonderful.

Perhaps create a Game Design Document. What is the combat like? You can create storyboards to illustrate how the game will work.
Alright, seems I've got some work to do, from checking out that first link. I'll post it when I finish up.
http://www.sfml-dev.org/ I'd love to help you, but not with making an entire game.
http://www.sfml-dev.org/ I'd love to help you, but not with making an entire game.
That's awesome, it should come in handy. Thanks a ton!
Sounds like a very interesting project, I've been looking for a good project to work on for a few months now. I'm quite proficient in C++, and I have the knowledge to write a game but just lack a good idea to keep me interested. If you write up some design documents on how you want things to go, and are willing to handle the media side of things (graphics, map design, audio, writing) I'd be up for helping you out.

Either way, I'll figure it out as I go. I have an incredibly basic design document, but that doesn't seem to be what you're looking for. In either case, I'm planning on fleshing it out and making it as specific as possible at this stage of development. It will get posted once I finish up, so keep an eye peeled. Thanks for your interest!
I am also interested in this. I apply myself well to any project that stays interesting; it's only when I hit I problem that I just can't solve that I lose motivation! So yeah, hit me up on steam or something for a chat.
Sweet! I'm going to have a small development team if this keeps up! This is great! Anywho, here's a WIP design document. A lot of details are missing, but hopefully it'll give you guys SOMETHING. Feel free to PM or steamchat me any questions you have if you're interested in working on this with me. http://filesmelt.com/dl/Sunblazer_Sidescroller_Design_Doc.wps Note: Some of the information in the OP is now false; the game in my mind has changed every so slightly. Hopefully this arouses no confusion.
You're the first person I've ever seen asking for programming help correctly. Congrats.
I'm afraid to ask how people frequently do it. Thanks, though, it's good to know I'm on the right track.
If you end up putting together a small team, I'd highly recommend looking into some sort of version control. For most programmers that's probably obvious, but seeing as you've admitted to being new, I'm not sure if you've had any experience with something like SVN or Git. Sending zip files back and forth between each other gets tedious fast, version control can help you there, among other places.
Which inevitably brings us onto; which is better for a project like this? SVN or Git?
Which inevitably brings us onto; which is better for a project like this? SVN or Git?
Not this shit again
Which inevitably brings us onto; which is better for a project like this? SVN or Git?
whatever the fuck you want. either works.
Which inevitably brings us onto; which is better for a project like this? SVN or Git?
Obviously git, svn sucks.
Obviously git, svn sucks.
Why? And think it is a matter of personal choice.
Why? And think it is a matter of personal choice.
No, if you use svn you're a moron. Git supremacy.
oh come on blank you're better than this, stop trolling. wait you aren't.
oh come on blank you're better than this, stop trolling. wait you aren't.
Oh come on efex, I thought you were able to take things less than 9000% seriously. Did you even read his post or just see 'git' and decide OMG BIG ARGUMENT BREWING BETTER GET IN FAST TO STEM THE TIDE OF DEBATE.
I'm going to put a foot down and say let's use Github, since it's the one I've had slightly more experience with. I've never used svn.
