Thought it might be cool if we all worked on a project together. That said, I'm going to lay some ground rules:
-PHP will be used
-All designs should be done in Photoshop rather than Illustrator (AI files aren't all that fun)
I'm thinking that CodeIgniter would be best for this project although I'd REALLY like to use my own framework, there's not much of a documentation to go along with it.
My current idea is a stripped down version of essentially goes down in the Web Dev forum. So a minimalistic forum type site but with an in-depth user ranking system. Everytime you help someone with PHP..you'd gain mastery points for PHP. Basically an RPG type approach to something like a reputation system. The forums wouldn't be so much forums but instead centralized topics with replies.
I'm open to other ideas as well though.

Not going to keep updating this post so just go to: #cos.mo on irc.gamesurge.net
We're all hanging out in the IRC nowadays.

I planned something similar with a fellow dev online, although we never got around to working on it. More points would unlock read-only forums where more-advanced developers for whatever language can talk without all the shit from beginners, the idea developed further as we considered offering things like SVN hosting/etc.
As for developing a community project, this was tried before (not entirely sure what the idea was), but didn't seem to pick any speed up...
Yeah, I had a feeling a community project wouldn't necessarily work...but maybe 3-4 people working on different parts could work.
If we could get one person doing design, one person doing HTML/CSS templates, and two people working on PHP I think we could get a solid little project together.

That'd definitely work, I'd happily do the design > HTML/CSS. Anyone else?
I can help with the design, and do backend work.
I'll be the ideas guy. :downs:

We also need a social media expert, are you up to the task?
We also need a social media expert, are you up to the task?
Absolutely. I specialise in syndicating user-centred folksonomies, and reinventing user-contributed ecologies, all the while keeping a close eye on disintermediate authentic network effects.
[editline]seriously though[/editline]
I genuinely am interested in helping out, only thing is, I have a fair amount of work on my plate at the moment.
[editline]durp[/editline]
I made a logo

[sp]By the way, that logo's shit on purpose[/sp]
i can help with the javascript :)
I'd help but I'd slow you down :(
I'll be the guy who adds some suggestions
I probably won't be able to actually work on anything but if people post lots of screens and shit I'd be down to throw some usability insight and shit your way. I'd say that I'd offer design advice too but between Stinky and Brett you guys probably have that down since Brett is way less lazy than me when he's writing crits hahaha
I can certainly help with frontend design and frontend HTML/CSS.
and frontend HTML/CSS.
As opposed to back end HTML and CSS
Alright, well let's get started!
I'm thinking that for starters we should work on the homepage layout. I'm thinking that we should basically have "hubs" that would essentially be forum categories but anyone could create them. There would be a few built-in hubs (PHP, MySQL, Ruby, Python etc.) but anyone who wants could create a Hub for "Introduction to HTML" or "Pics of Ponies".
Although threads/topics would belong to a hub, the frontpage would show content from all hubs, basically a list of the 50 most recently updated threads. (Think of hubs as "tags" if it makes it easier). If you clicked on the hub name though it would take you to all the related topics under that hub.
We'd also want there to be a list of the daily top users on the frontpage as well as a navbar with links to an About page, Hub Listing, and possibly Leaderboard.
At the bottom of a page would be an avatar list of the users who logged on that day. As the site grew we'd probably remove this feature as there'd be like 300 avatars listed..but at the start I think it'd be a nifty feature.
We should set up a git repo. Github (would be ideal, but forces us to open source - I don't see that as a bad thing.), or private?

I'd like to take part too :D

Any qualms about using Mercurial and BitBucket? It's free for private with up to 10 users and I prefer Hg > Git

I have no previous experience with either, but I don't have any issue with it, seems good to me.
[editline]16th March 2011[/editline]
BitBucket is only private and free for up to 5 users, it seems.
As opposed to back end HTML and CSS
Well I was going to put coding, but can you really call HTML and CSS 'coding' languages? Just didn't remove the frontend bit.
I can help, I think.
I can help with the .net
I might be able to throw in some HTML and CSS work if you guys will need it.
[editline]16th March 2011[/editline]
And also some design things if you need it. Having a group of designers could be fun.
Adam, go ahead and set the bitbucket repo, let's get started on this thing. Maybe we should get an irc channel or something similar going?

Use Shareflow or Slate.
OT: I can help with the backend here and there as well.
