• Programming as a hobby.

Hello FP. I recently took interest in programming and would like to start it as a basic hobby. I'm considering Python as my first language. Are there any guides or tutorials to using it? What should I attempt as my first few projects? Thanks.
there's a site called google lol (User was banned for this post ("Why reply?" - Overv))
But theres also a nice community named Facepunch. [editline]17th April 2011[/editline] Also, I think you should check this out, though im not sure if it's good: http://docs.python.org/tutorial/
I think these python video lectures are good: http://code.google.com/edu/languages/google-python-class/ They come with the materials you need to complete the lecture assignments as well.

Programming isn't a hobby, it takes over your life.
Programming isn't a hobby, it takes over your life.
I don't agree with sort of half philosophical statements like this, and I know you were probably joking so I'm sort of talking to no one, but I categorise it in the same ballpark as when you see them 'programming is art' people. That annoys me. Not everything is art. It's just a thing I do, not even all the time either. I can't imagine it taking over my life ever, even if I do it as a job after my degree. I mean, I can happily stop programming during the day and I'll start eating some biscuits instead. I think you see this kind of attitude more with programmers than with say, golfers or something, and I'm not sure why, but it still annoys me in a david-mitchell-esque 'I know it's silly but it still kind of annoys me' way. Edit: I don't mean this in a mean way, I hope I've not offended anyone!
'programming is art' people
More like: game development is art. And yes, it was a joke.
More like: game development is art.
That's slightly different because people have to make good lookin' resources for games, and make a compelling story and things like that. I just really don't like it when people say "...and I looked at my code, and it was beautiful". It's just a pet peeve of mine.
programming is an art! without creative side, would be anyone making innovative/better algorithms?
thenewboston.com he's pretty awesome and has clear video tutorials on just about every language EDIT: Why all the disagrees, guys? What's wrong with thenewboston?
I just really don't like it when people say "...and I looked at my code, and it was beautiful". It's just a pet peeve of mine.
As with all art, there will always be naysayers :v: I'm just kidding. It obviously depends on the definition of art. I can truly say I think some code is beautiful, but not in the same way as say, listening to music.
thenewboston.com he's pretty awesome and has clear video tutorials on just about every language EDIT: Why all the disagrees, guys? What's wrong with thenewboston?
He has started tutorials about every language ever, none of them are finished, and it seems like he himself doesn't take time to learn them. He fails to explain most of the things he's doing and more often than not just says thing like 'just do this' or 'ýou'll just have to trust me for now'...
I just really don't like it when people say "...and I looked at my code, and it was beautiful". It's just a pet peeve of mine.
They aren't calling it art, they are saying something is beautiful. Clever code IS beautiful to someone who is enthusiastic about code, and the clever interaction between software and hardware. Just like my high school maths teacher was able to instill the beauty of maths into all his students. Coding is no different!
Art is defined differently to everyone. Arguing about what is or isn't art is kind of silly.
I bet an infectologist would call a flesh eating disease beautiful.

http://www.openprocessing.org/ I believe it highly depends on the programmer/whoevers eyes its in..
Programming isn't a hobby, it takes over your life.
I don't know about it taking over your life, but I've certainly had some Sunday afternoons go missing because of it.
