Where to start learning programming and languages.

Recently I have realized that I really want to learn how to program. I am trying to find a good starting point but upon researching there are a lot of languages. Not only was I hoping to narrow down my choice of languages to start with, but also other things I should learn about that would help me along the way. I am new so the more information the better. I was leaning towards Java overall.
