I am thinking of getting a laptop soon with a small-ish resolution (1366x768). I was wondering if anybody else had any thoughts on using this size display for programming (whether you don't get enough real estate, etc.), and whether or not it would be worth looking for something else (upgrading on this particular model is a no-go). Thanks.
For a while I was using a 32" TV as a monitor and it had a 1366x768 resolution. At some point I upgraded to dual 23.6" 1920x1080 monitors, so much better.
Even if I only got one of those monitors I would have considered it an upgrade for the resolution alone. My current laptop is a 15" Sony S series with a 1920x1080 screen and it's wonderful for programming. I've used Visual Studio on a netbook before (1024x600) and it was extremely painful.
1366x768 is alright for programming, but if you want to put files side-by-side and aren't sticking to an 80-column limit, it's going to get a bit cramped.
external monitors <3

Yup, this too. Got a cheap-ass monitor for my dorm room, plug it in as a second monitor for my laptop when I'm there. Good stuff.
Its not ideal. But you can still use 1366x768. I've coded the best part of an enterprise web application on a 13" laptop.
Very different to my home where I have dual 24"
It really surprises me how much laptop displays have refused to evolve in the last decade. A laptop I got in 2007 has that resolution, and be quite frank, I couldn't imagine doing anything but casual web browsing on it.
I would look at 1920x1080 as a bare minimum.
laptops, like many consumer electronics, have to be manufactured for the lowest possible cost. when you have companies like Apple buying up all the high-end FRUs, the part manufacturers can inflate the price due to the added extrinsic value.
same happened with micro harddisks and the ipod.
I'm pretty comfortable on 1440x900 when I'm on my laptop, I have a pretty small console font size though.
16:10 is perfect for programming, you can have two files open side by side and get more lines visible.
04B-03 is a font that works well with size 6, if you don't mind variable width. It makes 1366x768 OK-ish but not great.
Tried programming some Java on my MBA... nope'd the fuck right out of there.
Back to my 30" desktop for me...
Well I plan on getting this laptop for college, and I also plan on bringing my desktop, so I would have the external monitor for when I'm coding in my room. I was just curious if it were sufficient for some mobile programming, and if there was any better solution.
EDIT: For those that are interested, the laptop in question is a Lenovo x230.

When you get stuck coding, you just kill time by counting pixels.
1366x768 is bad enough at 14"
I've been using a 1366x768 laptop for over a year now. I find that the lack of vertical space more limiting than the horizontal space. Even so, it's not too bad. I just use the page up and page down keys a lot.

I do have a good external monitor but I don't know what to do with all the pixels so usually I just start playing a movie on it

Those were dark times
1280x1024 master race.
I've been using a 1366x768 laptop for the past 2 and a half years, and I haven't had any problems with it.

I tend to use bitstream vera sans mono myself, it renders nicely at reasonably small sizes

That's nigh unreadable, what

I tend to do all my programming in that font size . It takes a little getting used to, but you can see a ridiculous amount of text at once
I'll give VS2012 with size 7 font. The line spacing is probably stopping me from going insane.

How the hell can you read that with font smoothing on?

Its probably because im on a train and my laptop is about 3 inches infront of my face.
When I get home, I'll probably revert.
I personally wouldn't use a laptop with that small resolution as my main coding machine, but my 1366×768 laptop does the job reasonably well when I'm not at home. Doing work on my 1920×1200 + 1280×1024 monitors is still a vastly superior experience though.
If this is going to be your primary machine, you really should get a something with a larger resolution, decently sized monitor, or get an extra external monitor (this is a good choice either way, you can never have too many monitors).
Working on anything below 1920 * 1080 is a no
I find it hard to program with only one screen.
Using two screens is just so convenient!
I program fine on all sorts of resolutions.
Anything less than 800x600 is where it becomes difficult because the toolbars etc. in my IDE get in the way.
1366x768 is what my laptop runs and I was programming fine for 2 years on it. Screens broken now though which has ruined my day.
I used a 1366x768 laptop for years and it was fine, now I've got a desktop with a 1680x1050 monitor
I sometimes program on my 1366x768 laptop. I use a 9pt bitmap font and 80 character width limit, so I can fit a decent amount of code on the screen.

i feel like im playing a game while coding
