With over 10 threads linking to people's own "companies" in this forum. It's time to say enough is enough. This is a Web DEVELOPMENT forum. Not a hosting market place. While it's perfectly fine to link to appropriate services inside threads, I can see no other reason to start threads for these services other than for self promotion and spam.
The description of the forum is
HTML, PHP, ASP, Javascript, etc..
. Please can it stay that way. I come here to contribute to the community, ask questions, see what projects people are doing. Not get spammed at.
Just look at this screen shot. It's not ok.

So if people could stop making stupid threads offering services that'd be great. It's nothing more than spam.
Edit: Macro Removed.
I don't mind some of them, as long as it's not made by a kid on their own that doesn't know what they're doing, and also plans on staying in business more than a month or two.
The guys from Fanatical and RamNode are great guys, and I've had services from both places from reading about them on here originally, I just get annoyed with people who think they can join Facepunch and make their first post an advertisement and that's all they do.
I don't mind if they have been part of the community for a while and people know they're reliable.
I agree, I think it's annoying and is not what this forum is for. I come here to talk about web development not to read about your web hosting company that you started 3 months ago.

At the very least it should all be relegated to one "web hosting services offered" thread or something.

Probably this.
Although it will probably end in becoming a spam thread.

Nothing > Spam Thread > Spam Forum

In that case, what makes the current threads not spammy?
You are right. This defintely needs to stop. I don't think anybody here with any credability uses anything other than ramnode or afterburst anyway.

I use rackspace, digital ocean, and linode.
It's rather ironic that I'm replying to this thread, given the fact that I run one of the services mentioned. (probably the first shared host to use these forums, actually)
That said, I actually have to agree. There's too many hosting providers here, and most of which are your every-day generic host with no long-term plan in place.
There's really just three main providers here, DeRoyalServers, RamNode and Afterburst.
These three providers are operated by real people. People that respect Facepunch, and actually own a copy of Gmod. (honestly, I'd rather play TF2 over Gmod, but both are fun games)
But yeah, this board really needs to get cleaned up. When the hosts rule over the real people, you've got a problem.
I just hope DRS, RamNode or Afterburst don't get caught in the mod-crossfire...
So someone who isn't providing hosting and feels like updating the OP when someone who provides hosting requests it should make a thread. And we should ask a mod to lock the current threads.
Could we have a locked sticky which has a list of start ups and those who run them?
That way we can restrict who posts and maintain a list of those companies with a higher level of trust than some of the start ups

Everyone deserves an equal chance. imo.

That's a good idea, but wouldn't that be more of a general all-purpose advertisement, albeit one for trusted providers?
Like, for someone such as myself, being able to post status updates and such on the thread is an excellent way to communicate. Downtime alerts, network upgrades. Stuff like that.
If everything were bundled together into a single thread, posting general status updates and alerts would be very hard to do. Would kind of defeat the point in using a forum.
The honest providers who don't fully intend to advertise, but just keep people updated on the latest happenings. (Twitter only goes so far, and is limited)

I meant the credibile users who actually use the services linked here.

If something happens with my websites the first thing I actually check out is Twitter. Perhaps I'm the only one in that use case, but Forum Status updates are not that important to me.

Twitter is certainly important, but not everything can be expressed in 140 characters or less.
If we happen to have an upcoming maintenance period, we would prefer to have the ability to write a full post that properly outlines everything that is changing, and what services (if any) are going to be affected.
We can't go into great detail on a service such as Twitter, not without posting multiple tweets, and doing everything we can to stay within the 140 character limit. That's why we'd prefer to use a forum, as forums provide more creative freedom to format our statements properly, and without limitation.

Use a blog?
That is basically what you're using your forum for currently, and I'm sure current customers would rather read a blog on your own site than forum posts.
Plus you could just link to your blog posts from twitter, which would make it a lot better for most people.

You should be doing that in mass emails to your customers and on a company blog not on facepunch.

Haha, so to be a main provider you have to have a copy of Gmod? This forum does not require you to play Gmod, take a look around at the forum boards. You sound completely unprofessional. Are you out of your mind? If the advertising must stop, it should stop for everyone and not just the host who have a copy of Gmod.
are all your customers from facepunch?
because if you're posting on facepunch about your services, johnny appleseed who runs a family blog probably won't check facepunch for business updates. so we can assume by doing that all or a majority of your customers are from facepunch, you joined just to advertise.
check and mate.

both of you sound/look unprofessional.
I really feel like the only advertising that should be allowed is that by long-term users. So people like Fizzadar and darksoul. It's pretty disgusting when people sign up just to advertise.

Every single time you post I get a foul PR taste in my mouth.
Every single time you post I get a foul PR taste in my mouth.
I was starting to think it was just me. I don't know how you can write so much and say so little
We got enough hosts now, and I think we should agree that we keep the current ones and throw the upcoming ones (There will be moar!) out of the window.
Even though this is the WebDev section, some of us need a webserver and a reliable host. Now that we got two shared web-hosts and two VPS providers that the majority of us like and agree upon, I think we should call it enough. Just lock the upcoming hosting threads and we're good.

This completely.
There should be outlines if you would like to post your company here, amount of time it has been running/how well known you are/how much you post here - or similar things.
If you don't match them, the thread will be locked and forgotten about.
Every single time you post I get a foul PR taste in my mouth.
I also thought the same thing

??
I have no idea what you are talking about right now. We have 1.2k followers on twitter and it's worked out quite well so far for announcements.
Even if you get rid of social networking, you can still post news/announcements in your billing system... which generally the client will see when they login to complain about something. You can also mass email people.
[editline]23rd June 2013[/editline]
Also just to clear the air here if this becomes a serious issue I'd have no problem with my thread being removed. It'd suck sure but I'd rather not see this forum become like the MCF host section which makes me want to kill myself every time I visit there.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
