Something I notice on facepunch more than any other community I'm on is that Facepunch has a high concentration of Comp Sci majors/people with backgrounds in programming and I was wondering why.
some theories:
1. I spend a lot of my time on the programming subforum and just seem to think that it's representative of the forum at large
2. Glua inspired a lot of young people to get into programming, who later on moved away from lua and onto bigger languages and made a career out of CS
So I thought I'd raise a poll:
1. I began programming because of Garry's Mod Lua (GLua) and still play Garry's mod
2. I began programming because of Garry's Mod Lua (GLua) and barely play Garry's mod
3. I began programming not because of Garry's Mod Lua (GLua) but still play Garry's mod
4. I began programming not because of Garry's Mod Lua (GLua) and barely play Garry's mod
I ask if you still play garry's mod because the programming subforum seems to be one of the most active communities on facepunch, but I think that a lot of users here no longer play garry's mod, meaning that facepunch is no longer a forum for people who play gmod, but has rather become a community in itself.
Should have had options that include not playing at all, I haven't played in years and I still come to the programming sub forum.

I figured that would go under "barely". maybe I should've clarified by like <5 hrs per week. I'm in the same boat. Hell I rarely play videogames at all.
i've never touched or even heard of lua
i used to do a bit of glua which inspired me to make a sourcemod, and then when i found out i hated C++ i moved to C# and now i don't program ever :(

Thats probably because you changed from 3 languages in what I imagine was a very short period of time.
nah. i did glua for a while tbh, then when i realized "hey glua lets me customize gmod a bit, but making a source mod would let me customize way more." so i made a sourcemod and had some custom weapons and vehicles and it was tedious but i managed to get it to compile and i made some levels, but C++ wasn't fun or easy for me to work with, so i switched to C#. i worked with that for well over three years i'm estimating, but then life and work got in the way and now i only program when i have a few days off of work.
I Learned to code for my Physics degree and I have never used that skill for gmod or games. I intend to try to make a simple game over the summer though.
I only lazily browse this subforum and never contribute though.
According to a study I saw, males into computers are more likely to get into CS majors.
Kinda obvious, but now you know a study says so!
I came from eventscripts and sourcemod development, which is almost the same area.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't sourcemod use Pawn?
I like Pawn better than Lua for some reason.

it was like pawn except bindings to source with developers strange and meaningless forced rules blended in
