Inside the cockpit are panels that control little miscellaneous things like light settings and turning stuff off an on. You won't really be touching things in the cockpit except for a very short startup/shutdown sequence and hopefully damage control, which I want to make a big part of the game but that's still a ways away. The functionality for panels and switches is already in place, it's a question of content at this point.

I promise I'll show you guys new stuff about my game I haven't properly worked on half a year.
I swear WAYWO.
Probably.
After finals....?
life goal complete
made it into highlights
too bad I started working on some other game instead, but hopefully I can use much of the code from the old game :^)
No highlights means I am being a lazy motherfucker.
Shame on me. :v:
Also OP delivered on the highlights, kudos.
This month I shall make something flashy since apparently polished and innovative middleware still isn't enough for the highlights...
(I need to do this anyway. I know I can't advertise my libraries with just code samples.)
Yes, yes, it's true. I've finally added this "game" thing to my UI software.
Continuing from the last thread (and I hope this isn't quite completely a duplicate):
Paint.NET makes up its own design patterns for seemingly no reason at all.
* The menu bar style it utilizes doesn't exist anywhere else in Windows, but looks as if it's designed in such a way that the entire element should be considered a tab.
* Usage of transparent windows looks like garbage.
* Tools and windows could be stationed together to form less obstruction over the subject file, but instead are by default, placed in arbitrary corners of the application, to block as much effective space as possible in an application where you need to see as much as possible.
* Gross as hell tabbed document crap that goes beyond menu bounds, where does this pattern in Windows come from? Nowhere.
[...]
* It is a tab. You can have multiple images open at the same time in the same window. The controls on the tab only affect the current one, those off it affect the whole program.
(However the standard tab slection is broken in favour of previews.)
* Yes, but it's still better than new Paint's ribbon abomination. You can also turn it off if you don't like it (unlike me. It's subjective and doesn't impact function).
* You can move them. Apart from that every single somewhat professional image editing software I know uses floating windows so the cursor doesn't have to travel far if you work in a particular part of the window.
* Not a single program shipped with Windows does what Paint.NET does. There's basically no precedent. (The closest is probably the photo folder image select (in XP? It's gone in 7 it seems), which is very close to this in function but would take up much more screen space.)
Otherwise I agree though.
The .NET stuff is from that naming fad Microsoft started at some point I think.
I'm so glad people stopped doing that or we'd pretty much drown in a flood of these titles by now.
Hi guys I'm working on something interesting
Haha april fools
Internship's killing me :<
[sp]Actually I'm kind of working on something, but it'll be a week or two before I'll post about that.[/sp]
I have this shameless mentality that if your software looks bad or doesn't gain a lot of notoriety, it probably says something about the rest of it's attributes. Paint.NET gained a lot of notoriety. It really is a good application.
I just give it hell because it's 2015 and looks like shit now. It hasn't aged at all. It was designed in a period of time when Aero WAS cool, when .NET and and conforming to the design style of other .NET applications WAS cool, but it's not cool now.
If you're designing for something now, don't look to the past to replicate it or gain direct inspiration from it.
Released a game and still no highlight for me :( I think I'm cursed
Also if you seriously think Paint.NET looks good, dude really? Come on.
Paint.NET is great! I can't see how you don't like it! The thing I hate the most about GIMP is how everything is free floating and I can never figure out what's in focus and shit.

That goes for visual styles, yes, but functional design is (almost) timeless and that's what Paint.NET does fairly well and Microsoft's new Paint forgoes for style which is why so many people openly dislike it.
(Besides, it's less out-of-date stylistically than the iOS/OSX emojis and I don't see the users complain about those.)

Sorry, I thought about including your OpenGL shader thing but I needed to keep everything to images (and yours was nothing special).
Personally I think Paint.NET is in an awkward situation along with every other desktop windows app there is. They're expected too look good and conform with system standards on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. When you take that into consideration I think their current design is a great in between of the two.
paint.net is probably the most intuitive design style I've seen. I think the worst example of UI design is gimp, and that's coming from me, the guy who sleeps with a Linus Torvalds plushie and prays to RMS every night.
Just had a similar thing happen when doing a simple loop over a vector. It's really tricky trying to figure out exactly what combination of symbols is causing it as well. It's like fighting an invisible enemy.
Glad to see war_man333 and Parakon in the highlights, I really want to see more from those games. I love the style and would be willing to throw a few bucks here and there to play those.
Those look like fun games man.
What are some good examples of Linux GUI?
Hard for me to say. I do most things command line. Chrome has its own GUI that doesnt change between OS's, and Unity sucks cocks IMO.
I like XFCE, Numix theme, with Nautilus as my File manager. Most things on linux are so customizeable, that good GUI is up to the user and not the programmer
Wow, my game made the highlights again. I should probably be working on it now instead of watching youtube lol
But... my OP? :(
Oh well, there's always next month I guess.
Oh gosh, Washed Ashore is highlighted..
Be proud of it mate.
You've come a long way since putting it on the backburner too!

GIMP has a single window mode. Look under "Windows".
You should consider turning to dribbble or Behance for UI inspiration.
I had typed out a long and passionate post but then my browser crashed and I don't have Lazarus installed yet so here's the gist:
- From a software design standpoint half of the stuff on those websites is superficial crap.
- Most of the other half is subpar compared to an Ikea shelf with half the boards missing.
- The reason for that are their extremely low utility value (in terms of convenience) and information accessibility.
- Your work is usually an exception, but if you fail at something it's usually utility too (the aspect ratio/resolution box order debate, your website doesn't work whatsoever without JS, Vertex Adbenture...).
- Works can appeal to many people even if some of their parts are (extremely) subpar (Twilight, Touhou, When They Cry, GMod...) as long as they get some basic timeless appeal right.
- Truly great works combine utilitarian design decisions with artistic ability to create their own style that's both beautiful and independent of trends, and this has been the case (<- at least I've heard of a few of these films and I know practically nothing about cinema) for a long time (art spoilers?) in any medium (I don't have an analysis handy, so you'll just have to trust me that there's a ton of stuff that's not just or not at all aesthetically pleasing in there).
