Selecting a single face in 3ds max

How do I select a single face in 3ds max 2010? For example just one side of a square

Convert it to an editable mesh/poly then use the face select mode.

You should just open the Editable Mesh modifier from the modifiers panel. Collapsing or using the Convert to Editable Mesh function will destroy the model's rigging. (If this doesn't bother you or doesn't apply, carry on).
