For those of you old enough to remember, MDK is a classic game from the Shiny 'golden era'. For a long time I've wanted to do some kind of fan tribute but lacked any kind of 3D resources to do it. MDK 2 was our best bet but even those models were pretty lacking/old school. Finally MDK 2 HD has arrived to answer our prayers for high quality Kurt, Max and Dr. Hawkins models! [thumb]http://www.beamdog.com/assets/products/9322/original/MDK2HD_Compare_CS1A_001.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.beamdog.com/assets/products/9327/original/MDK2HD_Compare_CS1C_002.jpg[/thumb] Please tell me someone else remembers these games besides me? Or am I just that old... Either way, I've taken it upon myself to port these models into SFM (and if enough people care, Gmod possibly) but I need some help with extracting. From what I've been able to find out, the models are stored in a kind of hex .mod format thingy. You can extract them using [URL="http://www.uploadmb.com/dw.php?id=1390034819"]hex2obj[/URL] but it takes a kind of math genius to figure out the right numbers to plug in to get usable results. I found one such genius in a [URL="http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11036"]xentax forum post[/URL] and he gave some example numbers that he came up with for the Kurt model. Using those numbers I was able to successfully extract an obj of Kurt: [thumb]http://puu.sh/6FeJU.png[/thumb] The good news is that the hex2obj extraction seems to work pretty well, no bones but the UV's are intact, textures are 2K (with normal maps) and are in .dds format so they are very easy to deal with, just had to flip and mirror them to get them to match the UV layout. There are also textures with the suffix _s which I assumed were the specular maps but when I opened them they were completely black, nothing in the alpha channel either. Not sure what's going on there, perhaps someone can help me with that too. I included it with the obj download just in case. [thumb]http://puu.sh/6Iyhd[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/6IyiJ[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/6Iykj[/thumb] I was able to fairly easily re-topologize the model and bring it into source: [thumb]http://puu.sh/6IsU0[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/6IsQk[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/6IsOJ[/thumb] Of course as any die-hard MDK fan would know Kurt isn't complete without his ribbon chute and chain/sniper gun which unfortunately are in different .mod files, which I need help extracting... Max and Dr. Hawkins are also big priorities but I'm just focusing on getting Kurt working first. I don't know if posting links to the raw assets for these models would constitute 'warez' so until I know for sure I'll just have to deal with people privately over PM. Also I'm not an experienced rigger/porter, I'm using these models as my test bed for learning all this stuff and it will take me a long time to do it properly so if anyone experienced wants to take a crack at it I'd be more than happy. For now [URL="http://www.mediafire.com/download/hn8gmsh82rov2px/MDK2_HD_Kurt.rar"]here is the OBJ and textures[/URL] for the main Kurt model if anyone else wants to try their hand at rigging it. Also the guy on Xentax forum [URL="http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=10894"]has a tutorial[/URL] on how to extract the models using hex2obj, I tried to follow it myself but my brain couldn't handle it.
Oh. My. God. This game right here. Holy moley. [editline]10th February 2014[/editline] Wish I knew how to rig people to the valve biped thingy, all i know how to do is upload models to the mixamo website I need to learn, even if it's just to rig this model
Learn how to extract the models so I can get the rest of Kurt's suit, i.e. parachute and gun.
PalmliX you're genious! Is that mean we can mod Kurt's model or anyone else? Like Max or our enemies? That would be something incredible cause I've never saw this kind of stuff in MDK series. BTW.
