Model has very large texture but still looks like shit

So I made a moon in max, and then textured it with this

As you can see, it's a pretty huge texture. However, in game it looks like this:

Ewwww. Why is it so blurred? I've checked the VTF and it looks the same as the texture. And the model is fairly small, only 960x960.
Not sure, did it look alright in your modelling program?
You could try making a normalmap, see if that helps.
Man, it's stretched across a sphere 960x960, why do you think it's blurry, that's almost a pixel for every unit and that's if it was a flat plane. If you don't want that to be blurry, you're gunna want a texture probably 8 times bigger.

Tell me if I'm missing something here, but since when does 960x960 = 2500x1250

He's talking about the model size as 960, not the texture.
The model's huge, and if you want crystal clarity, you either need a big texture to go with it or overlap your UVs to make up for the lower texture resolutions.
Is there any reason why it needs to be crystal clear?
Just add a nice detail sheet to the material sheet and leave it as that.

Well I understood that, but still why would that mean a pixel for every unit? It's not, unless I'm overlooking something.
Also, why does it need to be so close?
Would a model a lot smaller with the same texture make it look detailed as fuck? If so couldn't you just make a 3d skybox or something on the map you wanna use the model in (except if you don't wanna use this as a 3d skybox lolololol)?

The only reason that it would appear more detailed when smaller is because you wouldn't be zoomed in right up at the surface. But using it in a 3d skybox would just scale it and you would be stuck the same.
