Same model with different skin without decompiling? (Renaming the new and keeping old model and skin

Is there a way to rename a model so that I can reskin it without decompileing? I want to end up with 2 vershions of the same model; one with the old skin and one with the new skin.
I seem to have issues decompileing the model as it is one of the newer vershion models (87 or w/e that the decompiler will not work with).
I think (not know for sure) that you can edit the names in HEX Editor, but they have to be the same length.
Use notepad++ or hex editor to open the mdl file and change the bit at the beginning to match a model which you can decompile. You can also change the skin this way but as jinx said it must be the same length
