A few years ago I had a plugin for 3DS Max that would render the UVW unwrap output with each face being a different color. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called. It worked just like the standard render UVW except instead of a black background, each face gradient-ed into a slightly different color.
I wish I could find some pictures but I can't.

I think I found it. Texporter is what I was looking for I believe.
