If you tried googling 'start 3d modeling', for example, and came up with absolutely zero I beg to differ.
I suggest you either search for tutorials, or pick a program and then do so. XSI apparently works quite well. I prefer 3DS Max.

3DS max is a pretty god modelling program. I recommend trying out the 30 days trail before buying it :)
Also tutorials are on youtube/google
Any 3D modelling program have tutorial.
Get used to the tools/interface and views...
Can I use google sketchup?

srsly... use blender... its free and looks like 3ds max (only wat u need is .smd plugin)
I use Maya, but I don't recommend using that for Source models, seeing Its one painful process of getting them into the game.

:irony:
xsi is best for source, if you can get your hands on it.
god i sounded like a dick the best would 3ds max or maya
Now, I have never made a model, but as far as I know, easier said then done.
Anyways, What is the best 3d modeling program to use? I want to know how to make a model myself.
Check valve developer site. http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page
There is a ton of info on there. Searching for "model" will point you into the right direction.
After you decided which program you will be using, find tutorials for it.
There is also a shitload of info and tutorials in this section already. I know search is disabled for non-goldmembers, but you can always search this site using google: http://www.google.com/sitesearch/
There is no need to start a new thread with the most basic question while there is a load of info on this site already, not to mention the rest of the web.

I am lolling.
Introduction to 3d: http://www.webreference.com/3d/3dintro/
Try 3d studio max 2010 or XSI. You could use blender but it is very intimidating to new people in 3d and not really practical o use. Go to the autodesk website and try out one of them. If your a student you can get it for free for a while.
Maya doesn't play well with modding for source so I wouldn't dive into it for this... also modeling in general Maya wouldn't be my first choice. Maya is more geared towards animation.
3D modeling basics can be learned in a day but getting good at it could take years. O but if your stupid you can start cranking out deviantart quality work right away.
Once you figure out what program you want to use look up tutorials for it on youtube. Anything you would really need to know to create video game assets can be found on youtube and through fellow artists.
good luck noob
Can I use google sketchup?
Dude, that's retarded. Gooogle Sketchup is made for extremely simple architecture. (Or more complicated architecture if you're skilled)
Google sketchup works fine if you import the model into another program like XSI then .smd export it because the sketchup .smd exporter i found isnt updated. however its easy to use and can give you the base of a model really quickly and simple texturing giving you a glance at what the final may look like. Unfortunately im still trying to work out all the things in XSI to get it to do what i want so i recommend just learning one program which works like XSI or if you have the money 3DS max.
I made a modeling guide for beginners (like you) a while back. It kinda got dead.
But still working.

Will give you basic knowledge of what you need.
