WIP - CD cases - Developers

Release 1: [url]http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=877986[/url] Well, I'm think I've finally gotten the hang of the whole modeling system. I'm doing a couple easier things to make sure I've got everything together. So, I thought about what could be potentially useful while still being incredibly easy. Long story short, I made a CD case model. I found a bunch of CD cover images in my music folder to use, so I didn't have to search too hard. I made it incredibly easy to reskin: it uses three different materials, one for the front cover, one for the back, and one for everything else that's shared between all the models. This is, in fact, the first model I made completely from scratch. I've done quite a few ports, but never an original model. The test skin, Legend of Zelda soundtrack, Metallica's Master of Puppets album, and the Black Mages self-titled album. That, and I don't like looking at the cover for more than a second. Ugh. By the way, this was done using multiple skins, to keep the folder from getting too crowded. I'll do the entire Metallica lineup, some Dragonforce, and whatever else I find interesting, before I release, to keep the number of packs to download to a minimum. I'm thinking 512x512 is far too high a resolution for tiny album covers like this. It's still better than the 3000x3000 images I started with, but I could probably cut it down to 256x256, or maybe lower. Suggestions, requests, comments?

Until now, all I've heard is "The Hand That Feeds" on Rock Band, and some stuff he did for Quake, which is horribly downsampled. I found out the last two albums are CC-licensed, so I'm downloading those. I'll get started on the covers in a few minutes. Already finished the Metallica covers. I did all the studio albums (yes, even St. Anger), as well as S&M (possibly the greatest music ever). Had a bit of difficulty with The Black Album, since the GIMP compressed the TGA down to 15kb (all the others were around 200), and VTFEdit couldn't read it back in.

That's a nice extremely simple box you have there.

But then the copyright ninjas would kill me. And there isn't a good song on some of these albums.

With the multiple materials system, making a new one is as simple as scaling the front cover down, cropping the sides off the back cover, scaling it down, and converting to vtf.

Do Draft punk and Justice.

Well When do you think you'll have it up, I love the everyday models, They get taken for granted. Also Daft punk would be easy since they only have 3 albums, And Nine inch nails would be awesome! You could use the "+use" on them seeing as they are C&C and you aren't selling the download. If you're still taking requests I wouldn't mind Radiohead and or Beastie Boys.

When you do release these, would you mind if I make a few re-skins of this for practice? I have a few albums I'd like to see and I don't know how many people would want them other than me (some punk stuff). and If anybody would I'd let you release them, I'd just like some practice.

Sorry, it's gonna have to be tomorrow. I just spent five hours in the freezing cold, half of it after sundown, replacing a car stereo, and I really just can't be assed to do anything right now. That and a problem cropped up with one of the models that I haven't nailed down yet. I did write up a tutorial, and I'm including the .smd and .qc, so plenty of skins will be forthcoming from the community. Don't complain. Valve does this all the time.
