Hello all. I just got into modelling with Blender, and decided to jump right into modelling my favorite weapon, the AK-47. Since I own an AKM, which is largely the same as a 47, I have been able to break it down and understand it. That's when I decided to take up the challenge. I did use a reference image, but only port side of the gun. Everything else (thickness, bolt, safety, etc) was guess-timated. There are a few types of AKs, and the one I modelled is the standard Russian Type 2. That is, it has the milled receiver, elongated foresignt, horizontal in-line gas release slots, standard stock & grip, etc. Please keep in mind that I am not yet finished with the model, and that it is my FIRST ONE, so be easy on the negative criticism.

That's pretty impressive for a first model.
What did you use to learn? I've been interested in getting into modeling, but could never find the proper tutorials to learn
I looked at a couple of online tutorials, that just kinda helped me with the interface, and just figured everything out from there. The meshes truthfully are very sloppy, and I know that there are better ways to go about some things that I did, and just simply didn't know of. I still have much to learn. But I appreciate your comment. :)

How long did it take for you to learn Blender? I've been using XSI for a few years and might switch, but the interface looks like a complete cluster fuck to me.
Fantastic first model, however I'm guessing that because it's your first one there's going to be a rather large amount of things wrong with it, mind showing us your edges?
Really good job though, wish I could have made something that complicated as my first model.
Livewire, I'll be happy to show you some of my edges, but it will have to wait until I get home, since the model is on my main machine and I am out of town right now. I can tell you that one big problem I had was that I did a lot of subdivisions try and smooth out the edges and faces. But it actually just exacerbated the edges. The edges are rounder, but as a whole, you can still see the points and edges that I tried getting rid of in the first place.

I've been using it for about three weeks now or so. Other than that, no prior experience. I really want to work for a videogame studio as a modeller, so I figured while I'm getting my Bachelor's in Fine Arts, with emphasis on digital media, I should start learning now.
