My thoughts: Atlas and P body Player Models BEFORE release

So I was considering porting Atlas and P-Body over to gmod as player models BEFORE Portal 2 is released. Just to kill time. I pre ordered portal 2 which means I can pre load the gcf onto my machine. Of course there are many scenarios to take into account and well… this is just my inner thought process on the subject. The first thing that would have to be addressed is how I would go about doing it the plan is to
1. open up the gcf and find P-body and Atlas extract the files,
2. Decompile them and retarget all activities in the QC to HL2DM (which gmod recognizes).
3. re compile and test
of course this is just a basic plan and there’s many factors to take into account. Its very likely ill run into a problem which will prevent the whole thing from happening
What could possibly go wrong?
1. The gcf is protected to prevent this kind of tampering (at least until release)
2. the models may be too new for the decompiler and no amount of IDST, can fix it
3. the decompiler may screw something up (fixable)
4. the vtfs may be using some kind of new system that isn’t recognized by VTFedit (I say this because of the superior texturing capabilities seen at e3) which would make them invisible
5. Valve may not be offering pre loads at all for Poral 2
Even if I do manage to pull it off its almost guaranteed they wont be perfect
What could possibly be wrong with them?
1. They don’t use standard valve biped skeletons so they wont be able to use all the cstrike and hl2dm animations and will frequently go into T pose (almost guaranteed)
2. they were made for portal so ANY gun will put them into T pose or the gun will be sticking out of the stomach with an idle animation (again guaranteed)
Since this project is mostly intended to kill time and preview the models im not going to make any attempt to make them more gmod friendly.
If I can pull this off im not going to upload them because I don’t want to get into any trouble with valve since uploading a model for a game that’s not released may count as leaked content
im not even sure Id want to risk uploading them after the game is released at least not immediately ill wait for someone else to upload portal 2 content and see what happens to them :P

and if I can do it i will upload a video but I wont even consider uploading them untill the game is released
I don't think it'll be easy or possible to get into the game's files before it's released. Even if it is, why bother? Why not just be patient and wait for it to be released, and THEN start porting stuff from it?
And "i made this because i was bored" is a really terrible reason to make a thread.

That's a really poor reason. If you want to port them so badly then you'd find the time to do it.

It doesn't use GCF.
If you were bored why didn't you make a long useless post about how you tried to do everything you said you were going to do and failed because of the reasons haxxer mentioned? What a bizarre thing to do.
ok guys look the reason i posted this thread was to share my inner thoughts with the community and perhaps the community would pick up on factors i didnt take into account and help me improve my plans or scrap them. replys like haxxer and wootmans are what im looking for sorry if i didnt make myself clear before

gm_mount dosent help id still have to decompile them and re target the animations to HL2 deathmatch animations for gmod to reconize them as player models
i guess well find out if i can pull this off in 7 days

I just re-named all the scout's bones and merged the rest because I wanted a scout playermodel, since Snood never released his. Came out HORRIBLE.

I had gm_mount 2 and it's no longer working. It doesn't mount things for me anymore.

the vpks seem to be encrypted/content is hidden
i opened them up and they appear blank even though they are each taking some 256,402 megabytes
all i get is a blank vpk with an empty folder called root
oh well
on the bright side anything outside of the vpks is readable
this includes the script files, maps, config dlls
this is a list of npcs i found upon reading through the npc_soundscripts
[sp]
npc_android (possibly a bot for friendless players that want to play co op, or a military andriod)
npc_aperature_ai (glados)
npc_chicken
npc_glados_cores
npc_hover_turret (possibly a turret that cant be knocked over)
npc_mannequin
npc_rocket_turret
npc_turret
npc_zombie_aperature (zombies in portal?)[/sp]
Put [sp] tags over the last one.

ncf stands for no cache file

and the vpks are encrypted with VICE valves personal ICE encryption software

AW Who would have thought the spoiler tags would have spoilers in them?
GMod has been updated so you can use L4D/L4D2 models in it, so it's pretty pointless porting them as pretty soon it will probably just mount Portal 2.

A) portal uses NCFs, not GCFs, so the files are in "common"
b) do you really think they're going to give you un-encrypted files before release?
c) if they were decrypted, you could force the game to run early, or release the ending videos as spoilers (already done btw)
