So in order to both protect the baron himself and Brennenburg he used black magic of sorts to turn them all into mindless husks that will do his bidding just shortly before Daniel writes the last of the notes and drinks the amnesia potion. Read all the notes from Daniel carefully. They're the main plot details if not the only ones in the game until [sp]you meet Agrippa[/sp].
