I thought I might start a little side project as a Challenge,
I Challenge YOU the community to make a low poly gun model that can be used for posing and the like in Gmod, All entrys will go into a Pack which will be released for the community.
THE RULES!
-Models are limited to 1000 polys, and 1000 only.
-The texture maps must be 512x512 and no greater (this includes alpha and normal maps)
-They must be compiled for source with good collision models (I may make some exceptions and compile them myself depending on if the model is really good and the person cant compile for whatever reason)
The models MUST be placed in the following folder:
Models/FPWeapons/YOURFOLDER
In the YOURFOLDER section you can have your own name, or your own custom folder
For the Textures they must go in the following folder:
Materials/Models/FPWeapons/YOURFOLDER
The same applies in the YOURFOLDER section here you can have your own folder.
Feel free to make the guns as detailed as possible WITHIN THESE PARAMETERS.

Its 998polys, so obviously you can make some nice models within the 1000 poly limit :D

But yes feel free to enter as many models as you like, I would like it a big pack people can use for posing and such. Also Variety is key, I want realistic models not laser guns, but yes any sort of gun will do.

Did you just slap an UV from the side or is that properly UV mapped and textured? Can you get me a render from 45 degree angle?

Its not the best UV but yes it is UV mapped, I did not slap it on the side Lol. I will re-scale it and Take another pic, maybe it is a little big :) Besides I want other people to make guns for the pack to not just me :D So please people make some stuff :P
I'm guessing it's okay to exceed the 1k poly limit if it's a pistol plus a silencer? (the pistol alone is under 1k)
The idea is that its low poly, but I am willing to give a little say 1100 polys IF its really necessary, if not I will say no. Plus it doesnt have to be a pistol it can be any sort of gun.
Anyway As I promised, I re-scaled the gun (it turns out you were correct lol :/) and put a pic of it next to the CSS deagle for size reference. Also note that these are World model models and as such dont need to be extremely detailed, so both sides of the gun are the same, this isnt something that really matters it was just easier from a texture point of view, so my textures can still look good and stay within the 512x512 limit :P you may notice some shortcuts on the trigger and grip but as I said WORLD MODELS and this is negligable. Dont nit-pick this is going to be a big pack.

I still have to say that a really nice model up you did with realistic look texture on it. Are the metal area set with vmt, or is that the textures as well, that's making the refection look?
Thanks :) There are some reflections actually in the texture mostly oranges. but the model does rely heavily on cubemaps to get the reflections looking good. Anyway why dont you make one for the pack :P, I might make a sawn off shotgun next, with electrical tape around the handle. Variety is key.

BTW Second model done, sawn off shoty, it comes in at a huge polycount of 488, not even half the limit XD, its dirty and quite obviously a criminals weapon, seen used in the dark knight and the columbine massacre.... to soon?

Why count in polys and not in tri's, the game turns all the polys to tri's, so it's tri's that matter..
Well, I meant tris. That model is made out of 1001 tris. Usually when people say polygons they mean tris, even though it's not entirely correct.

But i am interested in how well you did cube maping on that.
Well its a combination of the texture and shaders, it was lucky enough to compliment it very well :D

Look real nice. What the setting on vmt did you use for the shaders?
I used the same setting that are on the hl2 357 magnum, but my alpha map has a far sharper contrast compared to the hl2 one, so the darks and lights are a fair bit further apart on the shading spectrum, its alot less subtle I guess. I might make another magnum to go in the pack, I happen to like them :P

I bet if you used that in HL1 you wouldn't really see a difference,stupid HL1 block weapons x.x
HL1 made up for geometry budget with really nice skins.
It's really nice seeing people use Milkshape. I always feel a bit weird using it to get stuff from Maya to HL2
