In this thread I will provide tutorials and help members learn how to rip 3D Models from videogames. There are 2 popular Ripping programs available on the internet for free in in short they both work in similar ways. By no means is this easy to do. Most of the time when you rip a model from a video game you end up with everything on the screen when you hit the printscreen button on your keyboard, once you extract the 3D model from the game you can open the converted file with a 3D Modelling program to delete the items you don't want to get the 3D character you want. First in this I will provide the programs to rip a 3D model with. 3D Ripper DX - http://www.deep-shadows.com/hax/3DRipperDX.htm This program works with Direct X 8 and works extremely well with Emulators like Dolphin which is a emulator for Wii and Gamecube games. There are also Emulators for the first XBOX which this program also works with as long as you have Direct X 8 you can use this program it will not work with newer versions of Direct X 3D VIA Printscreen - http://www.3dvia.com/products/3dvia-printscreen/ This program works the same way as 3D Ripper DX except for that it does'nt matter what version of Direct X you use. I am still learning with this program so I will teach here as I learn myself. A Video On How To Rip Models - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL2eejJoWI8 Aside from ripping models I also convert files. There are two places to get 3D Models from that have already been extracted from a game. One site is Facepunch and the other is S-Low. There is also FPSBanana you can get models from. www.facepunch.com - Go to the 3D Release Section to find models. In order to download some of the files here you may need Garrys Mod and Steam. www.S-Low.info - There are several files here you can download for free just look at the files and download what you want. Now when you get a file from either place, you will need the Crafty Object Viewer. http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=173 this program will open the *.mdl file that after you extract the files from a folder it will open the MDL file and you can export it as a OBJ file. I have always used Milkshape to open the OBJ file with after I convert it but a lot of the files you will download have a SMD lock which you may need to open the OBJ with 3DS MAX to break up the sections of the model under the Groups tab of either program. Ripping 360 models is much more complicated. But I can provide you a link with how to do some of it. http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3309 And here is another video how to use 3D Ripper DX for COD4 for example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYb12dEKuoU This program extracts Halo 3 and halo 3 ODST Models, there is also a program called Ascention which is suppose to be able to extract the Reach models but I am still learning that one. http://www.modhalo.net/index.php?/to...r/page__st__40 This thread might also help a little with understanding how this is done. http://www.spriters-resource.com/com...d=13280&page=1"] I have'nt successfully ripped from Reach yet, got a Rocket Launcher from a friend but there are two ways I've heard of using a modded XBOX and I'l also heard of opening and extracting the models with a program called Ascention.
post some ps2 ripping methods to
Sorry I've never ripped anything with ps2.
3d via printscreen does not work well when importing into 3ds max. not as it is called the error but the models are behind forward, the surface models is within and the interior is the surface. another ripping program is 3d paintbrush with his tool 3d snip .
post some ps2 ripping methods to
is ps2 not working properly, use dolphin emulator for ripping 3d models from gamecube and nintendo wii.... (find the same games of ps2 in gamecube and wii)
For the record it looks like you copied from an older tutorial somewhere. Because 3dripper most definitely works with newer version of DirectX than DX8. It's completely fine with DX9C If I recall correctly the limitations are DX6-9C and listening mode only on 32 bit versions of windows.
The DirectX 3D Ripper doesn't work properly with DX10, so keep that in mind when you're using emulators, because I know my PS2 emulator automatically used the DX10 graphics plugin and not the DX9 one and I couldn't rip from it. There's also a program called the Open GL Extractor (OGLE for short) that rips from Open GL, but I think it's a little harder to find now that the site is down, and I don't remember how well it worked.

will this work for games that are installed onto the computer, like sonic generations from steam? edit: let me rephrase this, is it possible to rip from a steam game with any of these programs?

Also, there's 3D Object Converter, which for whatever reason supports practically every game model except the most familiar ones (like our very own .mdl format >.>), and can output to .obj format, which Max loves.
what progam could i use to view the models i ripped using 3D Ripper DX
WTF you guys missed GameAssassin it rips models also their bones to www.gameassassin.com tutorial http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5913
1. The Xbox emulators are very limited on the games they can use. 2. 3d Ripper DX is the best model/texture dump you can use and it's a very poor method of doing it. 3. Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is on steam? 4. 3ds max is a modeling program that 3D ripper DX dumps for, thus is the program you must use when using 3d ripper dx. 5. 3d Ripper Dx should only be used as a last measure to rip models and textures, instead you should attempt to use the stock game tools, someone else s mod tools, or your own tools. 6. To rip from ps3 or any other "inaccessible" console, you should have access to the files on the game disk folder hierarchy and get the desired models and textures. Some games (more popular) are compressed/encrypted and can't be accessed, other games use DDS format for their textures and have direct models, to get them in 3ds max do this: Youtube Link
I have another question, is it possible to use any of these programs to export files in a format Maya can use?
