Hey guys I just came out with a great idea and decided to build it on hammer! I call it, THE ULTIMAZE
This is a great map where you go through a maze while listening to some of the best HL2 sound tracks! You will see many puzles and obstacles on the way to the exit, once you get to the exit/tele you will have to fight off an antliongaurd and ***75*** antlions with the entire Half Life 2 arsenal! When done defeating the boss go into the final tele and you'll be gretted with a shiny room with a sign that says END. From there you can just disconnect, Thanks for downloading!

Hey, I tried! Its not the best, but if you pay attention to the game/map other than the screenshots its is actually very good! Dont let the screenshots stop you from atleast trying and giving [i]SOME[/i] credit to a beginner... Thanks

That maze is too tall. I do believe there should be a reason why we should explore this..maze. A wall that says "END" doesn't give much motivation.

There's nothing bad about making bad maps, everyone has to start somewhere. The bad thing is that when some idiots release their first maps.
When making a map, you should ask your friends or more talented mappers to test your map before you release it; they will probably find something to change and you should listen to them.

Thing is, that's exactly what he's doing. Trying to get for example you to try it out and give him advices, instead of just screaming "[highlight]BLOCKY!!1[/highlight]" at him, tell him how to reduce the blockyness, and general horrible-ness.
For example, "Ahh, this room's abit dull. Add some fitting props and some decals to the walls, the roof & walls really shouldn't be that tall, make them abit lower, the textures is kinda repetitive, good idea to change them, and maybe change their scale abit, morphing may also be a good idea. It also needs some better lighting, be sure to give it another color than white. It may also be a good idea to add some cubemaps. After you've done this we'll look at it."

We learn from out mistakes, as long as we know what our mistakes are. And if the map is generally shit, research how to do EVERYTHING!

When i released my map, i was told never to map again. The criticism i got was very very harsh. But i didn't whine. I didn't complain. I made my mapping better. I started with fullbright boxes and turned it into stuff like this:

Whining and complaining that people don't like you map isn't going to do you much good. In all honesty, your map is blocky, ugly and needs a lot of work. Functionality is nothing, if it doesn't have the eye candy to suck people in. Of course, if you can't take crit and use it to improve yourself, then don't bothing picking hammer up again. If you don't learn and keep releasing maps with the same problems, then you will get the same criticism.
Is it dynamic? Do the walls move?

A quick tip, being all mad just makes people laugh at you. However, if you remain calm and ask them why they think it's blocky and whatnot you could learn a lot and maybe some point soon release a map that people really like. For example look at IronPhoenix's work. He COULD have just made that concrete bit flat and the grass flat, but he decorated it and made displacements and added props. Never expect a lot from a first map, but expect to improve a lot quickly if you listen to criticism.

Perhaps your missing the meaning of the word critique ? For the most part , their has been little no critique going on here, it's called a verbal lynching. He has had little input on how to make his map better from this thread, so I don't know how you can sit their and claim that this attack on him is crucial to the development of a mapper.

It does not, I fully agree.
I see 5 useful posts in this thread. Salt1, you don't even give any criticism towards the mapper, just tons of abuse at those posting things.

Thats because I PM'd my advice. If you would like I can post it here, I can probably pull it up (OK here it is)
1.) Narrow the maze and lower the walls - A trademark of the maze is that the hallways are narrow and give little ability to jump to the side . By taking away the ability to jump to the side , you cut down your effectiveness in combat. Lower the maze walls but not the ceiling, you could add a manhack spawn up top and have the Manhacks descend upon the maze. Not to mention you can add a room in the ceiling area where one can gain a veiw of the map from up top once they complete the map the first time.
2.) Arena’s - You seem to wish for the ability to fight NPC’s in this map. Every now and again add a large room area with plenty of room to move, perhaps even weapons to run and pick up as you fight. The texture in the room should be drastically different than the rest of the maze but you should make travelling through it imperitive to your success in going through the map.
3.) The trap area - I saw an area in the movie that shows someone being trapped between two doors when the player moves in the area inbetween them. I’d make it to where you have to make it under the closing doors to survive , and if they fail you should probably have some consequence other than being trapped.
4.) Multiple Levels – If you make the map multiple floors you increase the difficulty of the maze
5.) Dead ends – Another trademark of the maze is the dead end, a point where the runner must turn back and retrace their steps before they continue. For added fun, sprinkle in some triggers consequences on some dead ends so one had to choose their direction wisely.

If you can't take critism, don't release your maps.
Something i saw in the map:
The lights you have, there should be a source where they come from. Like a light prop on the ceiling.
The walls looks the same, and very undetailed. You could have different areas, some with flames, water area, dark etc. And the walls could have decals on them, small windows, props, why not curved walls?
Could be fun if you had no weapons, and the antiion guard was chasing you around the maze.
-Blocky (use curved walls maybe, instead of everything being perfectly straight.
-Poor Lighting (No theme, and no Light Sources)
-Repeating Textures (Use some Variety)
ok, I may or may not continue the maze, but one thing Im gona start on is a complete model of my house with every single detail and texture :D
