going to start making maps and downloaded the source sdk, but there isnt a grid. its just all black. the one with the left 4 dead authoring tools works fine, but since its a newer engine will it have any effect on useability with gmod?
Go to the top toolbar. Look in "view" if I remember correctly

Mah bad, it's in "map" and it's called Show Grid
Are you using the gmod configuration for SDK? If you are, don't.
