• Interesting Skyscrapers or Tall Building concepts

Hello, I am currently working on a (a sort of) sequel to a map I finished pretty recently, now on toybox. It is named "gm_simulationcity." It is a large open build map populated with modern, non-enter-able skyscrapers based on designs I've seen or come up with myself. Because of a comment somebody posted about it, asking for an updated version or similar map, with more interior space, I felt inspired to do something i have never seen done before, make an entire city of enter-able skyscrapers, with build space on each floor. I have 6 or so buildings completed right now but I am having some trouble finding inspiration for more structures. So if you are intersted in seeing this map completed you can help me out by posting some images of interesting (prefferably modern) skyscrapers. (I do not intend to copy their designs exactly.) keep in mind that the building needs to be large enough to build inside! I will post some screenshots of the map after my latest revision of the map is done compiling. (which should be soon enough) I envision lots of players being able to build in these buildings, showcasing and testing their contraptions on their own personal floor. (possibly removing them and testing them out around the city via doors and opening windows and such) *The dome topped building has to be redone (the dome is all messed up) *Screen-shots aren't the best quality and i have AA turned off. deal (respectively). You need help with google images?
You need help with google images?
Funny, i guess. I just figured somebody might live near some building, or know some building, that they found interesting. Google-ing skyscrapers won't get me very far after the first 3 pages. (AND I USE BING IMAGE SEARCH)

Ok so no skyscrapers then?
Recreate the tower off Die Hard.
I found none of those screenshots to contain interesting or tall buildings sorry
I would say they are definitely interesting and well made, but not exactly tall enough to be considered skyscrapers. Some cool skyscrapers here though Good luck. *EDIT*
Most cities define the term empirically; even a building of 80 meters (262 feet) may be considered a skyscraper if it protrudes above its built environment and changes the overall skyline.
I guess really if you had a city that was ONLY populated by skyscrapers, you could argue that none of them protrude above their environment that and are not skyscrapers :v: In all seriousness though, you have some lovely buildings, maybe you should keep going with smaller buildings like that then throw in some really impressive skyscrapers, it could shape up to be an awesome map.

Go look up "Dubai Skyscrapers" on Google Images. [editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
I found none of those screenshots to contain interesting or tall buildings sorry
You sir, have no taste.
This is my kind of mapping good job.
Thank you, i am going to look at your ideas. Things are going pretty well and I fixed up the dome building and all. The problem i face now is building the lifts inside each tower.. func_tracktrain is not working to well. as for the buildings being tall, i might have to post some more screenshots so you can get the scale of theses buildings. ( i do understand the fact about ALL the buildings being tall not making them skyscrapers, technically or whatever.)
Did you create these buildings from your own imagination or did you use reference images? If so, what images did you use? I plan on designing a city in the future and I can never find any interesting references, but your dev map is a bit inspiring. It's a good start. Also I clicked Lilolia's link, and I saw this: What has Notch done :saddowns:
ok, some screenshots to put the buildings to scale, some testing out the toytown effect. Not if you've played Minecraft :v: What is wrong with your func_tracktrains?
Looks nice.
Not if you've played Minecraft :v: What is wrong with your func_tracktrains?
I have two func_tracktrains set up in two "twin" towers (nothing to do with the world trade center) and they spawn outside the building, behind it, ground level. I can't seem to fix it, they don't even move when i push the buttons i have set up for them. (i got it working once, but the elevator spawned on it's side, and didn't stop at any stops i set up for it.) also I like the landmark tower, and the tower from die hard is the"nakatomi plaza"? http://johneaves.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/desert-d1.jpg?w=655&h=1040
Are you sending an output for the func_tracktrain to stop once it reaches the path_track? Make sure in each path_track's keyvalues you set the orientation type to "No Change". Also check the origin of your func_tracktrain entity (it's a little white dot that appears when you select a brush entity. That is where your tracktrain stops at each path_track, I get the feeling your origin is somewhere outside of your brush entity. This tutorial should help you: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Two-stop_elevators Look at all the inputs on func_tracktrain here: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Func_tracktrain
i am actually having trouble finding it's origin, i'll check around where it spawns.
Go to the func_tracktrain's origin keyvalue and type 0 0 0.

OP, the Combine glass texture does not fit. I quickly mocked two up for this map; don't bother crediting. One is opaque, the other transparent http://www.1337upload.net/files/1materials.zip

One is opaque, the other transparent http://www.1337upload.net/files/1materials.zip
I actually like the combine glass, but i will test your transparent material in my latest build thanks! and i fixed the origin so i will test. [editline]28th March 2011[/editline] Ok now compiling with the latest "Landmark tower" based building, textured with web's edited combine glass texture. I'll post a picture when it's done. Also, do you people think i should add internal lights on all the floors? because to me it seems a lot of "natural" light is let in through the windows. [editline]28th March 2011[/editline] Ok, done compiling, here are some pictures of the new building with the glass texture, i think i'll use the glass texture and the combine glass texture together to add some more variety to the map. The building is VERY VERY different from the one in the picture. so it was inspired, not copied or whatever. here is the front entrance of the building, i thought it was large enough, (being the largest building on the map as of now) to give it some kind of modern-art thing. Not overly successful. Just around the front lobby of the building, simple so far, there are two columns that run all the way to the top of the building. Lastly the elevator shaft, really makes you feel small, I still haven't been able to get the elevator to work, but it's spawning in the right place now. what do you people think? next time I post a crap load of pictures i will hopefully have more to show.
I love these buildings, are they for anything specific?
I really want to make a skyscraper now :/
I really want to make a skyscraper now :/
Then go make one :v:
I love these buildings, are they for anything specific?
I really wanted to make a skyscraper (kind of like NotExactly does now), and it was difficult to think of a way they would be usefull or interesting (other than visually) So i decided that i would treat each floor like a room, and make it a sort of "personal" build space for people. So it will be for sandbox, because it opens up the possibilities, and, makes it so i can build bigger, and more creative than somthing like RP. (because with rp i would have to build all the interior and textures and blah blah which would mean i couldn't build to many skyscrapers.) I am hoping people will download and use this map on their servers when it is done. (i'd love to play it multiplayer myself.)
