this is a map I made in my free time over the course of a little over 2 days. it was a real challenge to me because I've never mapped a realistic looking home before. and after losing my major mapping project, I was pretty unmotivated. but I like how it came out, so I'll post it here to see what you think.
it doesn't really have a point. it's for posing, eye candy, maybe machinimas? it's got a pretty simple feel to it, which is why I left out a 3d skybox. it took away from the architecture/foliage. it's got a lot of models/textures from a lot of different sources, but it uses about 95% custom content, the only vanilla things being a sink model, a TV, some pictures, and 2 potted plants (not including the doors).
i guess enjoy.
please, constructive criticism only; this took a lot of work, so please respect me, and ill respect you. if i get positive reviews/comments, ill put it on toybox, and possibly garrysmod.org
oh, here are some screenshots, and a youtube video for your enjoyment.

Looks good, you should release it. Even if it doesn't have a point, it's a well designed, good looking map, which is far more than can be said of a lot of other 'pointless' maps I've seen that have been released.

thanks!
the only reason I'm hesitant about putting it up is that, if pakratted, the file will go from 2 MB to about 30-35MB. since it uses so much custom stuff, it's all gotta be put in there.. it might not even be worth it if you've got 10-15 minutes of playability.
Was I the only one expecting a relaxation chamber from Portal 2?
Very nice, Reminds me of my holidays, Release it 30-35mb is nothing to me.
Yawn! gm_construct remake!

i actually underestimated the file when packed - it's 68MB. :\

Wow fantastic first post!

no it isn't.
hey, im gonna use this as a question post. it's topic related for an alternate version before release. i was tuning up the thunderstorm version - when i came across something interesting: my scrolling texture does not work.
it's a storm warning system. im trying to get a ticker on there that scrolls text like on a real TV. however, it isn't scrolling. im positive my .vmt is correct.
"UnlitGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "warningticker"
"TextureScroll"
{
"texturescrollvar" "$basetexture"
"texturescrollrate" ".5"
"texturescrollangle" "180"
}
}
I like this a lot. (Especially the palm trees!)
This just looks so awesome. Also can you tell me where to find the foliage/tree models?
tree models - to be honest man i have no clue where i got them - but i can send them to you if you message me
here it is, a screenshot of the thunderstorm version. or pre-hurricane. the windows are boarded. the owners must have left in a hurry. no cars in the garage. the pool is covered. the only thing on in the house is the TV.

I could see this being extended into a big map with bunches of they s scattered across a beach.
very nice.
daytime version released on gmod.org - you can find it @ http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=120642
Edges of the roof have diagonal lines and you might want to add some molding to those walls, at least at the floor.

maybe when a v2 comes along?
except 4x the size - and not a humble house either.
don't bother replying posting. ive messed up pakrat. it's not worth the effort. as of now the only people that will get it/have it, are the ones that have already downloaded it.
can't find directories or anything for half the missing models + textures. i give up.

I can pack the map for you if you want.
You can manually select the textures you are using in the the CSS texture folder. Just don't pack from your desktop like I did my first time :v:

It's visually appealing! I hate to see people quit on such great maps.

You should keep working on it! It's a nice map man.
Also, where did you get the oven model? I'm looking for one...
Seems like its from l4d or l4d2?
Anyway, this map is a good start, but it could be better. For one, the layout of the house seems a little too simple. If I get what I saw from the vid correct, you just walked through 2-3 rooms in a straight line.
Not to mention that they don't really seem to be rooms at all, but more like objects placed in a room like fashion in a corridor. I've personally never seen a house that has that clean a path from one side to the other. I would widen the second room, and have something more to delineate the kitchen from the family area, like a half wall or something. It will really contain the space much better, and it will make the rooms feel a lot less empty and blank than they currently do. I mean look at the entrance; all there is to break up the walls are awkwardly placed pictures that are placed with the all to painful obvious intention to break the space up.
Instead, maybe have some sort of side seating area or a counter/ mini closet, window, anything to give it more character and more shape.
The outside looks neat, but it would be cool to also have a private beach or something as well.
Also, I would get rid of the flower/grass texture in the backyard. It's just bad. it clashes way too much with the ferns and the palm trees, and the shadows under whatever those white things are just make it that much more flat and undetailed.
I would also put more effort into the walls on the back yard, stucco is cool and all, but it would be much better if you had some sort of terra cotta trim or designs on it.
you also seem to need work on wall dimensions, as they seem too thick, should be either 8 or 16 to look realistic.
In general, you could do some good by replacing your windowsills and columns with models as you would be able to put even more detail into them.
...and that's all I have to say.

also, what song was that?
