Hi everyone, i am making a new flatgrass map (don't worry, its something COMPLETELY original, not all the boring square and round crap on garrysmod.org)
and.... i have no idea what style of lighting to pick.....
i would do different styles of lighting fr every section, but that would be impossible, lol
so.... i wanted to ask what would look best:
the daytime/nighttime mod...
sunset (would look pretty good on the surfaces)
night(would be a great time of day for a few builders, but might make the map slightly unpopular)
middle of the day(shitty-ass flatgrass style, but its liked alot)
foggy... boggy style (VERY unfitting)
fullbright (the disgrace to all maps, but it leaves no spot dark.)
I recommend using sky_day02_10, its pretty blue (closest imo to the popular militia_hdr) and its around a mid day/afternoon effect. Make sure to check here: [url]http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Sky_List[/url] to see what lighting is recommended for that sky-box texture
assault, lostcoast, maybe wasteland
Will it be triangular?
Also, I hope you aren't stealing any ideas from gm_superflat.
sky_day02_05 is great.
Unless your using counter strike, then use militia_hdr or tides.

lol, no... do you realize that i have not idea what gm_superflat is not downloadable? i cant find any downloads.
anyways, i havent seen a single download for a map like this.

i guess militia hdr would work.... but i have no idea how HDR works....
i heard a few rumors that HDR makes everything twice as big...
and that it can screw up models....

1) HDR builds two sets of lightmaps, doubling the filesize for the lightmap portion of the bsp file.
2) HDR bases lighting not solely on pre-calculated brightness on each face, but also takes into account the overall brightness in order to allow the digital "eyes" to adjust the lighting around you. A quick google search should be able to explain it far better than I could in that one sentance.
3) lighting =/= models, except for lighting them - but with or without HDR, some larger props will look unrealistically lit until you compile VRAD with the -staticproppolys and -staticproplighting flags. They don't get messed up though.

You know, you don't have to compile in hdr to make the hdr skybox work.
I love the very last skybox used in HL2, at the top of the citadel. sky_day03_05 I think...

actually, valve decided they didnt want to make another skybox, just for this scene.
so INSTEAD they made a shit-ass material, a dome-shaped model, put the material on the model, and forced the model into the skybox.
so yeah, i personaly think that that 'sky' is seriously BOTCHED

I think he means the actual sky around the citadel, sky_day03_06
