I really want to get back to my map, RP_Russiancity. This would be the first time that I could work on it since August 13, due to the band season. Well, now that it's all over, I want to get working to it, but I just can't seem to get myself to open Hammer and start working. I feel like I have the mapping blues. How do you guys get past this feeling? Any help is appreciated with much gratitude.
I'll pay pal you two cents if you finish the map
I usually hit the Valve Developer Community. Dunno why, but looking at a few tutorials on mapping (whether I need them or not) gets me psyched for mapping. Maybe it just gives me a big, tecnological hard-on.
Go see what others have been doing in the pimpage thread, always helps me get motivated.
i usually listen to music that kinda goes with the theme of my map, when i was working on my gta4-based map, could you guess what i listened to? :downs:

Actually, I can't guess what you listened to, but I'm currently mapping and listening to One Vision by Queen (it's in GTA IV on LRR) and it's making me think about GTA... even though I'm not making a map that has anything to do with GTA.

I take a break, go play some flood mod, remember how dumb some of the people on the internet are and slink back into my mapping cave.
:fuckyou:
And i listen to music/have references/look at professional level designers' work
I usually have pockets of time where I map, and the rest of the time, I'm working on some other project. Right now I'm programming for my school's robotics team and I've been trying to get iPC 10.5.6 to run with full support for my hardware (dual booting Windows 7 and OSX). I'm also considering getting into C++ and SFML a little.
But I know that I will always end up in Steam's Tools tab, opening up Source SDK and working on one of my many unfinished maps.
Two things that help me with mapping: music and extremely high goals/expectations for a map.
1) Music - I'm personally a fan of many types of music, but when I'm mapping, I make sure that the music is (somewhat) fast paced and upbeat, it really helps my productivity.
2) High goals/expectations - When I come up with an idea for a map or sketch out a concept in my notebook, I always set the expectations high - custom textures, custom models, lots of detail. This always gives me something to do (I actually find it hard to choose between 2 or 3 potential things I could be working on at once). If it starts looking good after a few compiles, it just drives me to do more and more. It's kind of like a system that drives itself in terms of keeping me busy and excited for a map.
Thank you all for the suggestions. It worked! Last night, I finally opened Hammer and went to fixing and adding. And I will continue my work this week and when I can. I think the tutorials and map pimpage thread helped a lot. Also, some music always helps set the mood. Thanks again! And when I get to what I hope to get to, I think a lot of :fappery: will be going on. :)
Just relax. Music. Pictures. Movies. Sleep (i've gotten inspiration in dreams). if you come to a road block just step back, maybe even just make something - then you'll be surprised when you begin making something on a new project and realize you should add it to the old one, then - bam! Win.
:jihad: Motivated now? :v:
what usually make me want to map is thinking about what familiar models you could make blend almost seamlessly with the map, yet making people think its brush based because it blends so well.
Finish your map before 2012 cause the world will blow up. /sarcasm.
On a serious note: Just stay relaxed and think about your map. Don't be distracted by anything else and have only Hammer open. Also stay true to your original idea of your map and don't be tempted to add something that could ruin your map unless you know it won't.
I just ate a LOT of pop-rocks and drank some root beer. I'm farting a lot but my stomach didn't blow up. (I'm sorry but i had to say this, it was crucial.)

Stop derailing this thread.
Anyways, I seem to have this problem with mapping too.
I get an idea, start working on the map, then by the next day I don't feel like doing anything. I have around ten unfinished vmf files in my maps folder, and I can only continue with a map if it was a portal level.
I usually tend to listen to fitting music while I work (pendulum :buddy:) and I always try to observe the architecture of buildings if I go in the city somewhere. If Im mapping for portal, I just play the whole game through, then I get a feel for what makes a portal map feel right.

I have over 50 unfinished vmf's.
Now I'm not the best mapper out there, and I really have no motivation except that its fun to me. I always tend to listen to music, and block out any body else who is trying to get my attention and distract me. I always come on here often to tell people how to solve a few problems.
I also have a lot of friends who I show my pics to and they give great support about them.
before I reformatted my computer I probably had around a gig or so just in un-finished maps.
