My first map includes:
Terrain
3D Skybox
Fog
Displacements
House
Rain
Gooooooooooooood joooooooooooob..
You should make an RP map.
"RP_11yearolds" or something.
It's better than most people's first maps.
From the pictures alone I can tell that the walls are to thin and that you need to fix up the roof a bit, its too boring.
Fog needs work.
Also needs more room
Make a map thats like a nice country side with alot of road, and alot of empty buildings.
AND DOESN'T USE CSS/EP2 TEXTURES :argh:

This is actually what I've wanted as a map for a while, but I'm not able to use hammer. (Physical Limitations)
This looks nice for a first map, but there is not much use for it.
I think its a good start for a first map

A 3d skybox doesn't mean the texture...

Who said I just put the texture? That would be a 2D skybox.
Thats why I used a sky_camera to project the fog from another source.
You should still try making that Country Side map :)
Better as the most first maps, other people their first maps are mostly fullbright, and they don't even know how to make rain.

It actually took me a long time to figure out how people made fullbright maps.
I had always assumed that if there was no light entities you would just get a pitch black map.

Valve should disable fullbright by default. Would put an end to 95% of the unlit maps we have.
People just need to stop releasing your first map, seriously, what do they have to gain? - besides a bunch of bad comments or someone telling them what they already know they need to do.
"Here's my first map - yeah the lighting sucks and its not detailed but whatever"
(Not talking about this dude specifically)
Fix the lighting
Detail it
If you know it already then you don't need 100 people telling you. lol
But it shows people you might have potential in the mapping industry.
Imagine you release a map that no one likes, but then someone that is making a kick-ass mod or something sees it and puts you in their work group to help make their mod.
Wouldn't that be awesome?
Nice to see a newbie that knows how to use lighting, func_precipitation, and displacements.
just work on your brush work and smooth the displacements, they won't be so pointy.
Where is this 3d skybox you mentioned?
Lord Ned will be jealous of this.
looks just like mine
GREAT JOB

I don't understand why there's a light_environment entity in the first place.
There should be more stuff to adapt lighting and lightning, as in sudden changes in lighting, as well as weather under map properties or something.
Really I don't get how it ever needs to be snowing in one bit of the map and raining in the other bit, or how it's raining in x area but it's dry in y area even though you've only moved downwards slightly.
Because not all maps are lit with a skybox. And light_enviroment is CEnvLight I believe which is derived from CLight.
Lightning is just sprites... Why would you want Hammer to control the weather? The i/o and user setup should.
Because it's a bitch to manually set up the rain boxes around your level if you have detailed brush work out there. You can thank valve for not adding particle rain to EP2
Do you have any idea how this stuff even works?
Last time I checked it clips through brush work, func_precipitation that is. I haven't bothered with rain on EP2, just snowfall
You need some more detail, add some windows to the house, and change the texture. Set the walls thickness to 16 units, The roof can use some modification
Bad things first: It's pretty small, and the walls and roof need work.
Good: Proper lighting and rain, all on a first map. While this can't be used very practically, it has 800% more in it than most My First Maps. (BS number, but go with it.) You've got environment figured out. Work on buildings, scenery, and the like, then start planning out something more complex. Keep refining your skills and you might make something sooper dooper amazing!
Not that bad
