• Would it be illegal if I put music into a map?

So I'm kind of thinking of putting radios into a few of my maps that you can click on to toggle the songs, similar to Valve's jukebox in The Parish from L4D2. The difference is they're a huge company with money to fork out for copyright and all that, and I'm an independent mapping guy. 1) Even though what I'm doing is nonprofit, is it still illegal? 2) What if I put credits somewhere in the map (in a readme, by brushwork, by a game_text or by other similar means easily accessible ingame - would that make it any more legal? I know there's a less then slim chance I'll actually be caught, but the main question is, is it illegal, what can I do to prevent that without paying any money or contacting any agencies. Please answer the questions individually, I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into if I make a mistake.
Maybe if it was DRM free music, but I don't know. Lankist might know
Well what I would do is contact the artist of the music. I'm pretty sure if what you're using someone's music is non for profit you will most likely be given permission to use their music with out having to pay some money or something.
People put tons of music in maps im not sure if its illegal but no one really cares
1) Well, your map might be non-profit, but that still doesn't change the fact that you're spreading the map and said music for free, for people to rip it out of. You best contact the artist. If you have no means of doing so, then perhaps look for free music distributed on a Creative Commons, with the rights for redistribution being free. 2) If you want to give credit to an artist, do it in the form of a stylish custom decal. It's MUCH better then brushwork.
Technically it's illegal, But really... Almost nobody gives a fuck.
Everyone does it. Noone cares. Do it.
No one will do anything about it, and no one can prove you never bought it, or if everyone who played your map never bought it.
make it so that only people who own the music can use it.
make it so that only people who own the music can use it.
LOL ^ But seriously, do you honestly think anyone would care? Even more important, do you care if anyone cares?
Yeah, even if it was, you'd most likely have gone ahead and done it.
Even if some producer happened to be playing gmod or css, do you think they are going to hear the song, decompile the map, then go and track you down like a dog? FUCK NO DO IT :fuckyou:
LOL ^ But seriously, do you honestly think anyone would care? Even more important, do you care if anyone cares?
You could actually do that pretty easily. It could be a sound file not included with the map. :smug: Nah, I don't really care actually. I've only ever seen songs that are too embarassing to be copyrighted and stuff ever used in a map though so I just wanted to make sure.
Yeah, even if it was, you'd most likely have gone ahead and done it.
To be honest, yeah
