• A SWEP/SENT testing map: Is it a good idea?

Alright, for a long while (since May) I've had a grand idea for a map that I feel needs to be made. Everytime I see someone release a SWEP, when they make their videos to show it off, it's always on gm_construct or some other build map with some makeshift firing range or a crapload of NPCs as targets. This isn't right. We need a formal, dedicated weapons test map. Build maps aren't made that well for that stuff. However, no such thing exists right now. Some people will think this is dumb. Some will find it unnecessary. I think this would be very handy for any SWEP maker. Think of the issue like this: You just bought yourself a bunch of sweet guns from the local shop. Since you're a gun nut, you want to see how accurate your guns are, their damage, etc. However, there's no firing range in town (or for miles). So the only way to test that AK-47 of yours is to fire it at some cans in your backyard (going to test it anywhere else with anything else is illegal in your crap town.) What I'm trying to say is that sure you got somewhere to test it, but you're not showcasing the gun's fullest potential with this 2nd rate testing grounds. I've actually been already making a Alpha for this type of map on and off for the past 8 months with 3 weeks of work actually done (school and PC problems to blame). Here is the info on the map so far: Name: gm_WeaponsTest Purpose: To provide a dedicated SWEP/SENT testing grounds. % to Alpha completion: 45 Planned ideas for map: -Spawn room -Main hub area -Indoor Firing range -Outdoor Firing range (with possible basic physics house) -Armory (complete with HL2 weapons spawner and ammo crates) -A medium Flatgrass/Flatwater area (it'll handle anything the other rooms can't) -Blast Pit (with control room/bunker) Screenshots: *WATCH THIS SPOT. Come back here tomorrow* Also, keep note that I'm a somewhat new mapper (can do all the basics and and some of the more complex stuff) so don't expect me to do the next Botmap here. I don't expect people to be amazed by it. Now, I want to hear YOUR thoughts on this. Should I continue? Can it be improved? Please give me CONSTRUCTIVE criticism/comments on this. P.S: I'm also looking for another mapper to help me with this project. PM me if you're interested. EDIT: Due to the advice of a mod, I'll add in some screenshots of the completed areas so far later.
If you're going to do this, make the map relatively small, so it won't take too much time to load. When I'm tweaking a SWEP, I need to get in and out of GMod quickly enough.

I'll try to shrink it down to make switching programs as seamless as I can (it's taking up most of the compile time right now.)

It's just stupid. If anyone does that, the moderators will ban them - that's what they're there for. To be honest, the map seems kind of pointless to me. Bsp-reviews who are you and why do I agree with you so much
If you make this, you should make some targets that are fun to shoot to like moving ones and when they pop up one by one. You should also be able to see where you hit the target on some kind of monitor. If you put these in it'll be nice, you'd get my download.

Anyways, it's redundant since mostly everyone in this section is decent and doesn't do this crap. It's been taken down. As for the map, that's your opinion. Someone else might find this very handy for SWEP calibration. But I respect your view on this and will try to make a decent map with my knowhow. I don't deliver crap. Brilliant idea! I'll add this in. BTW, I'm also looking for a good target texture. It has to be human shape, very detailed and big. I tried Google, but they don't have what I want or the quality of it is crap. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can give me one.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone can give me one.[/QUOTE] Not sure if it comes with CSS or HL2, but there is a wall texture with a human shape on it you can do your brush work around, then texture it later. Not the most optimized way unless you try Propper.
A nice, small map with a shooting range for regular guns and such and maybe a multi-purpose room (Enough space to run around and shoot) for some unusual SWEPS, and we might have something here.
Well, based on the polls and the responses so far I think it's safe to say there's a big enough demand for this type of map. As soon as I get the time, I'll start going back to working on this. All the advice will be put into consideration as well as any criticisms. I'll try to get a working Alpha done by the end of Christmas. No promises.
