I have been wondering why there aren't proper apartment blocks in gmod. Not even the quality Eastern Bloc level ones, instead we have far far far more worse. And atleast 60's-80's are very simple repeative. So lets break one tenement block: [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/tenementti-bd190f.png[/IMG] As you see every apartment is just (mirrored) copy of each other. Lets break it even further: [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/128x128-fff284.png[/IMG] You can say that 90% of the entire building is made from 128x128 concrete blocks. [B]Now lets get into hammer:[/B] [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/elementtej_-5f344e.png[/IMG] I made very quickly 4 basic elements for a basic tenement block. [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/tenementos-4aabc0.png[/IMG] Lazily modelled standard apartment. [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/floor-00638e.png[/IMG] Made first floor (could use elevator and better usage of space). [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/copypaste-630205.png[/IMG] Copypaste. [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/more_cv-a30ebd.png[/IMG] More copypaste, plus inverted apartments for 'better' look. [IMG]http://files.1337upload.net/finalment-4c4a0d.png[/IMG] Made smaller windows for stairwells. Now the tenement only needs clutter and minor details, like gutters and small roofing for the enterances. Now we have 84 invidual aparments. But i would suggest you not to make everyone enterable, and merging flat elements into one brush. Proppering elements (windows&balconies) would be wise. You could also use this method for creating more modern apartments with cleaner textures and by breaking up the copypaste structure.

i see you're getting your examples from straight across the gulf of finland :v: i drive by that building like every day on my way to uni. i love that kind of buildings a lot, the more cramped they are from the inside the better. one time i made this based on a building in stalker: [IMG]http://i.imgur.com/VsdnNVc.jpg[/IMG] the original building was like fully enterable but that takes a lot of brushes even with propper usage

If you could do a short tutorial on planning and laying out underground infrastructure (ala soviet era utility tunnels and sub-moscow leadership metro system) if you have the knowhow I would be excited to eat that up like pie.

Great tutorial, but i don't understand who needs something like this. I mean it's the simplest mapping thing in the world, just blocking boxes :) Good job, anyway.

Awful lighting, awful texturing, awful brushwork. I guess you can chalk it up to better mappers having higher standards and so releasing less stuff, and the 9-year-olds who play Gmod not knowing any better, but...fuck.

But the Hl2 content fits for Eastern Bloc maps nearly perfectly, and yet we still haven't seen many of them...

It appears people forget that the majority of the RP consumer base are 9-14 year olds with PCs that can't handle complex geometry and whose internet connections can't handle the large file sizes that come with custom content. As well, I feel like there is a "It's everywhere, it must be the best" societal complex going on as well. If I were a new player to gmod rp, and I see the outstanding list of downtown and downtown spinoffs in the gmod server list, you better believe it would create a bias within me to think that rp_downtown must be the best map ever, reguardless of it's objective quality.

The layout is nearly perfect for it, and the optimization is decent. A great RP map has to be built like a combat map with complexity and equal use of tight/large spaces rather than realism alone. It doesn't look great, but if someone wanted a CS:S-like map that is built from the ground up for RP that's it.
