I want to make my first real map. The only catch is I can never come up with anything good or find anything that catches my eye in the requests sub-forum. So I'm curious: where do you get your inspiration?

Do something simple, like map your room.

That thread is great inspiration...
Go out into your town, and look for some architecture that intrests you. Then map that.
I get inspiration from other maps and games, I have a few pictures I took from my phone when walking home from school and I fold the shit out of paper in science class since I have no idea what the teacher is going on about, so I usually find an interesting shape and photograph that.
Actually, while viewing the Map Pimpage thread, the idea hit me! I'm going to work on one of the floating islands from Avatar!

I just have random ideas that I think sound cool and try to map them.
I also map places that are interesting that I go to. When I went to Gozo, I stayed in this amazing villa, and all I could think about was how much I wanted to map it. The longer you think about it, the better the map will turn out and the better the techniques you're using are.

For a first map, you probably shouldn't work on one of those.

It'd just be out of simple displacements. I have messed around with making other stuff though (nothing finished). I did start making a castle which was pretty fun. I did a great job on the towers too :D. I think I'll be able to handle one of those islands!

Go ahead, no one's stopping you. :)
You have to find your own inspirational mix. For me i map best at 1.30am, listening to fast music after walking in the rain. I've heard alcohol helps some people, others prefer classical music. Find the right balance and you should be able to be able to map anything you "see".
Whatever you do though, don't force a mappers block. It will fade eventually when some factor is put into the equation. It's usually a specific song for me.
I have a notebook full of ideas, when I'm bored I just think of some excessively complicated idea for a map, occasionally one is really good and reasonable for Source.

Could be worse. I write C++ in a notebook. Sucks when I realize I forgot a line...
