And when I changed the file filter from vtf to vmt, vtfexplorer gives me a bunch of error messages, and then crashes. How can I fix this?
why are you using vtfexplorer and not using gcfscape is beyond me.

So I can export the textures into actual images and edit them.
There's this wall texture with 2 windows and gray bricks, and I want to edit the texture and make it with only one window.

photoshop has vtf compatibility I'm sure..

The problem with that is that I don't have Photoshop on this computer, only the one that only supports Mac computers (My dad uses a mac and uses Photoshop a lot and he allowed me to install it to my Mac. This was before I got this computer).
I use GIMP on this computer instead, and it doesn't look like there's any vtf support for GIMP, sadly.
Actually, what I think the real problem here is that source materials.gcf (the file I'm trying to export from) will have unopenable/missing files in both GCFScape and vtfexplorer, like so:

And yes, I've checked and HL2 is fully updated.
Hmm. Are you sure you've got the latest versions of vtfexplorer/gcfscape? Also, VTFEdit can open images and export them to BMP/PNG/TGA
Use source 2007 shared materials.gcf
