Howdy all,
I've been working on some new spacebuild content, and I thought it might be cool to make it into a shared project with the talented folks on Facepunch. The SBEP people are doing a great job of providing us with new tools and parts, so why can't we do something similar with maps? If we pool our skills and resources, we could come up with some seriously cool maps to add to the limited supply of spacebuild maps already out there.
This project will be developed under Episode 2. I know some of you won't like this, but Episode 2 offers a wider range of resources, and I think we can make much higher quality maps using it.
Anyone who wants to contribute is welcome, even if it's something small. Here's some ideas to get us started:
-Individual buildings/structures
-Planets
-Asteroids
-Caves (as part of a planet or asteroid)
-Models (detail props, planet shells, foliage)
-Sound effects (ambiance)
These are suggestions, really..if you have a great idea of your own, feel free to share!
Resources:
Planetary Dev Kit- A must have for building planets. All my planets are based off these templates

Foliage pack- Awesome pack of, well, foliage. Very useful to supplement the standard assortment of plants in the Orange Box. To install, extract the models and materials folders to your ep2 root folder.

And finally, to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and show that I'm not going to just be the "ideas guy" on this, here's a demo planet for the project:

Feel free to post screenies of your progress guys!
I don't have space-build, but I would gladly make some textures for this project.
Just put a list of materials you need, Ill try my best to do them.

Nice! Actually, now that you mention it, some decals would be nice. Maybe some alien language glyphs we could put on a building or something.

Im guessing they would need to be bump-mapped to represent a "carved in" letter, but sure, Ill try to do some hieroglyphs.
Awesome. A quick google image search brought up a few things for ideas:

Hope this helps!
I'm going to look into setting up an FTP server we can all use to upload/download resources to/from..that will probably help facilitate the exchange of said resources between those of us working on the project.
Using the standard galactic alphabet, make messages into the walls. Stuff just random like, "Hacker" and things like that.
Ok, I can't bumpmap them, the normals either won't work or it completely replaces the texture. I can still do other stuff like floors, ceilings, walls.
Heres the glyphs I tried to make D:

I'll do the decals for you. I'll get started with some random ones...now.
I would join if I could make sb maps...
Using the glyphs -- a good idea would be to write down a stargate address onto a wall. Just make the stargate 'hidden' in the gatespawner so it cannot be dialed without knowing the address, and therefore cracking the code.

Ooh, nice, implementing some puzzle work into the map. Maybe we could have an area with the code already cracked, but on some other planet.
I could do some materials too, I guess. I think I might also be able to fix up those glyphs of yours, Diealready.
Something else we would need is a really good skybox, if anyone feels they're up to the task. There's some nifty reference pics in this link here:

I'd love to have something like the EVE online skyboxes...is it possible to pull those from the game?
Also, there's a neat photoshop plugin called Lunar Cell I use to generate the planets in my skyboxes. A demo version is available here:
http://www.flamingpear.com/lunarcell.html
You can fairly easily do Eve... I think. I don't remember how much success I had last time but using DXRipper might capture the skybox... Can't remember if it did last time I tried.
Someone might have had luck porting directly instead of ripping in the Models/Skins forum but I don't remember.

I actually had a idea similar to that ages ago, I just never get around to making a SB map to do it :saddowns: Mine was more a hub of some sort, with a holographic map or something, containing a rough image of the solar system and the planets addresses for a secondary or hidden Stargate.
I'll help.
I'll try and work on some maps. I don't have much expereience, but at least I could find out why everyone thinks maps with like 3 big planets are fail, instead of like 7 small ones.
Ooh, nice, implementing some puzzle work into the map. Maybe we could have an area with the code already cracked, but on some other planet.
I think on the spawn planet, there should be some glyphs, tell thing player to go to another planet after they crack the code. After they go there, and crack that code, they get another address, and so on, until they find the end address...

Oh, by the way, I am in.

I have already (previously) made a small planet, but I do not have the model for the (the planet looking thing). Could someone release a pack of planet models? That would be helpful!
I'll help.
Oh, you're back Luke, hey! :D.

Yay! Yet another Spacebuild pro!
Now I can learn and make my head hurt at the same time!
Something I started working on this afternoon:

Great idea starting this thread Bynari - I'm in need of some good skyboxes and planet models for the SB maps I've been working on and that foliage pack could be good, I'll check it out.
First question: would anyone have a good idea how I could do a decent looking shield for my Atlantis map that's visible from both inside and outside? Maybe I need two translucent shells one textured inside, one out - I'd be happy with a similar look to the atmo shell surrounding the space station in Forlorn, but I need it a specific size and my modelling skills are still weak!
Also, does anyone have any good stargate atlantis props they think would look good in the map?
As for contributions, I'll help out wherever I can.

Oh and sweet looking map so far, I like the power transformers - models or brushes?
More screenshots, this time of the bunker:

I hate those floor, wall, and ceiling textures. At least use a different ground and ceiling texture. Maybe make it not as square and more round.
I agree with Sally on the floor part. Make it concrete and ditch the displacements.
The walls and the ceiling are fine.

Those are standard HL2 models.
Hey. Can someone give me some custom textures/skyboxes and models so I can build with them? I lost my others.

Free to a good home.
Sorry for nto being able to media tag them, apparently bitmaps are unsupported media.

Each side is 512 units wide. All you have to do is split them apart and bingo! new skybox.
You rang?
So how do you make these things, anyway? I suppose the sides wouldn't be too hard, but how do you make the top and bottom textures seamless?

A little known program I found on the internet while looking for a tool to help me paint skyboxes that outright generates skyboxes.
What's the program called?
