No matter how much I drag and modify this exact corner of my map, It just doesn't look good. I don't know how to make this corner not look awkward. It's a trainstation, if you were wondering. Yes, I'm bad at mapping. This is my first map. Also ignore the cube full of skybox textures, It's temporary.
Add some small details like on this building for example: [t]http://suite101.intl.s3.amazonaws.com/article_images/258853_nowahuta23.jpg[/t] Add maybe some balcony: [t]http://www.jung.de/691/~vp/master/PR_2012/Plattenbauten/Bilder/Frontalansicht_Plattenbau.jpg[/t] [t]http://bilder.t-online.de/b/64/42/77/54/id_64427754/610/tid_da/trotz-sanierung-haben-plattenbauten-nach-wie-vor-ein-schlechtes-image.jpg[/t] Play around with the geometry and dont make just a simple rectangle. Add some more edges and corners and trims. Look at this building it is a perfect example for a "common" urban block of houses. [t]http://www.daburna.de/Bilder/HGW/plattenbau_greifswald_005.jpg[/t] You can find the best references about architecture in the reallife. It is mandatory to take a look at reference pictures to get a better impression how to create buildings and stuff and believe me this will help you a lot.
My problem is the trainstation flushing with the tunnel and the apartments, I have NO idea how to make it look right.
I wouldn't make it a flush merge from the apartments to the tunnel. Make the tunnel stick out a bit more, with some sort of walkway maybe, and push the apartments back so they aren't lined up. Also break up how the apartments look, add indents, and balconies. I would say never use a flat wall like you are doing if it is close to the player, if it is background filler where they will see it behind buildings and not be able to get up close to it, than use a flat wall with some stuff to break it up if they can see a lot of it. Also break the apartments up into different buildings with different heights, It breaks up the skyline and makes it friendlier on the eyes, add a proper roof with antennas and so on. From the looks of it the white building on the right is directly connected to the yellow building. You don't have anything that breaks things apart like how it is in real life. Most buildings have some sort of transition into one another or alley ways, or fenced off areas. Also, now thinking about it, what you have doesn't make a whole lot of sense, a huge apartment building ON TOP of a train station and tunnels? I don't think any business man would want to buy that apartment complex. You would probably be better off building some warehouses or factories. Things that make everything flow well together and make more sense, and can naturally feel better to the human perceptive. Preventing the brain from questioning things about the world. Letting the users subconscious accept it as a real world. Lots of level design is understanding how a person will react at face value, and at a deeper level. The trick to level design is making the brain feel like it is a natural environment causing the player to not question his environment and be able to understand it and accept that the world is vast and isn't just the level you are walking in. I miss being a level designer.
You could disguise it as a huge bridge. https://goo.gl/maps/mu9UA Then again, that's a bit rad.
I think this solved my problem, I moved the apartments to another location and basically made the building the trainstation, Then there will be a blocked off area access to the new "bridge tunnel". Thank you guys!
