I was wondering if anyone has ever created a 2D skybox that had the Halo ring running around it like what you see on Halo maps? By this I mean when you looked up in the first Halo and you could see the other end of the ring above you and follow it around to where it "connected" to the actual map, giving the illusion that you were actually on the ring. If this had been made, does anyone have a link to it? I'm working on a new map and I really would like to see this in it. I haven't looked on FPSBanana because I can only surf a few pages at a time before the site crashes on me so sorry about this thread if it's easy to find right on there.

Here is what I mean; how you can see the ring and follow it around.
I'm sure there was one on FPSbanana, though you mentioned you cannot browse safely. I will look for it.

Apologies, couldn't find.
That one is not in as good quality and it has its parts that are not close to the real thing.
I might later reupload the day version for you. Because I only downloaded that one.
Here it is:

Thank you both of you. It would be great if you could upload it somewhere. That is exactly what I was looking for.

You could make a 3D skybox with a thin cylinder in it, and scale it to an enourmous amount for extra awesomeness, and use an empty 2D skybox :v:

No.
Fuck I'll finish Kahboh with this.
Thank you very much for the links. I'm glad it translated so well from Halo to source. You don't really see the edges of the "cube" of the skybox at all.
No.
Come on, it's only a 100.000km diameter.
No.
Why not? It would be the best looking way to do this and won't require very much effort, resources, time or patience.

There is a difference with a random hl2 texture ring and the real halo ring model.
The halo ring model would not look as good in the 3d skybox as the real halo skybox texture does with the space stars, clouds and planets.

Wait, what?
You can have the stars and stuff still.

Just an example.
I didn't really put effort into it, because you can add fog, so it looks like its far away. I used a shitty sky for it, ect... If I bothered about making the map look good I would of spent more than 6 minutes on it, to make it look nice.

Seriously, you do not care much of halo or know the story much. The skyboxes for the ring used in halo ce, halo 2 and halo 3 looks way much better than acually having a ring in a 3d skybox. Also saves you on fps.

Really I don't know the story that much?
I've been playing halo since combat evolved, I'm pretty sure I know the story bro. Although I don't care much for halo (anymore. I used to, but the retarded ass community it generated got to me) I still know a lot about it.
Something you would be able to do with the 3d skybox that you wouldn't be able to do with the texture would be to have the ring fire if you wanted it to, just for the base of the map Idk.
No shit the textures are going to work better, but I was saying that if you have it in the 3D skybox its not going to cause much of a difference if you did it right. (such as texturing, fog, brushwork, ect...) This way you could have whatever skybox you wanted to. It could be a prefab.
3D skyboxes don't eat up that much memory as it is, especially a clipped arch and that it. So don't talk about frame rate loss from the 3D skybox.
100.000km diameter.
Really don't think Source can do this even with 3D skyboxes.
you can do any size by changing the scale.

Civil, before you rip on people for deciding to use methods other than your own, consider that it HAS been done in a map before, and it looked fine. you just have to make it so that it's at the very edge of the skybox and large enough that people can't go to the side of the map and see the edges of it.
The regular halo skyboxes looks better. END.
He wanted the skybox texture and you guys keep suggesting something he does not want.
We didn't.
VaSTity did.
I was just proving his theory.

Change the skybox scale to 65536 then shrink the player with lua to 1/16384 and it leaves you with a good 3 mils off. But it wouldn't be very noticeable.
You could have a stationary ring with a 3d skybox that rotates on axis, to give the illusion that you are on the ring and it is spinning :p
Actually, part of it is 3D. In halo 1 you can see lots of tiling in water on the ring closest part.

I didn't think that was possible. Can you actually shrink a player with Lua?

That's a bitmap on a face in the skybox. It's like the moon, the sun, and Threshold; they're all textures on a face.
Unless you're talking about something totally different. (I think you're thinking of the second mission where you crash land near the cliff.)

Yeah. There are tools in game.

Had some fun toying with the idea. The ring itself is already pretty big (made it before I realised you could change the scale) but I upped it to 1024 anyway. These screenshots were only at 128 scale if I remember rightly, so naturally the current version is stupidly big. In fact, I'm tempted to agree that it would be a lot easier to just put it in a 2D skybox. At x1024 scale you'd barely notice it moving in-game anyway.
EDIT: Tried setting it to 16384, and Hammer crashed. :D
EDITTY EDIT: At 8192 it actually breaks in-game, and resets back to scale 1.
That's the smallest Halo I've ever seen. Not worthy of the Forerunner extravaganza.
[editline]11:16AM[/editline]
Oh wait, sorry, 10.000 not 100.000, bad memory of mine. My Bad.
Still a stretch though. If you use all of the grid for the skybox you might be able to do it.
At 1024 it actually starts to resemble the image the OP provided. I could probably cheat it a bit by narrowing the ring itself, but sadly any higher skybox scale than 1024 makes it drop back down to x1 scale.
It actually IS as tall and wide across as the grid will allow. So either the grid would need to be enlarged or the skybox scaling limit would need to be increased (somehow) for it to be any larger.
BRB: getting screenshots of the current version.
Hmm, yeah it comes out as about 6500 km when I do the math. :/
Still, pretty good. As long as the internal dimensions of the ring are good it should look fine. 10.000 km diameter, to 22,3km thickness. Can't find the width anywhere. Guess you'll just have to eye that one from concept art and screenshots.

I'm not actually planning to expand on this in any way. I'm just messing around to see what's actually possible, and to see if I could get it to resemble the original Halo. If the dev-ring looks close enough, then I would consider that a success.
