• What is Z-fighting and how to prevent it

Most of us know what it is, though may not know the name. This is a small bit I figured to post, to help prevent this on maps, and to inform you if you wish to be informed. You know the look of this, yes? When two texture brushes cross over each-other, they can show this. Because of it's flashy-ness, it is rather noticeable; and can make or break the map. It's is fairly simple to fix, and I'm sure all of us have done it, but you still see it more then often enough for it to be an issue, in public-ally released maps. If you wish to find out more about this, please check the wikipedia page. It tells you a lot about why this happens if it isn't obvious enough, and other such things. But, it is not concintrated on Source, so many of you may say 'blah' when that page comes to helping you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-fighting
Z-fighting is a phenomenon in 3D rendering that occurs when two or more primitives have similar values in the z-buffer. It is particularly prevalent with coplanar polygons, where two faces occupy essentially the same space, with neither in front. Affected pixels are rendered with fragments from one polygon or the other arbitrarily, in a manner determined by the precision of the z-buffer. It can also vary as the scene or camera is changed, causing one polygon to "win" the z test, then another, and so on. The overall effect is a flickering, noisy rasterization of two polygons which "fight" to color the screen pixels.

So yes, the fix;
It is actually one of the most simple things to fix in The Hammer, when grouped with problems like leaks, and other such things. If you notice, whenever this occurs; your brush over-laps another brush. Note, this only happens when a visual texture is on the same face as the connecting brush. Go ahead and put five hundred no-draw's at the same position as a real texture, it will not matter. In easier terms.. it no good good if one texture over-laps another. All you have to do is move one of the brushes, so it no longer over-laps the effected brush. Simple as opening Hammer, no? The only issue is when you have complicated shapes, but by that time you should be-able to figure that out on your own.
Um... ok?
We need a thread to tell us "don't let brushes overlap" Now we must have a thread to tell us "don't carve spheres"
We need a thread to tell us "don't let brushes overlap" Now we must have a thread to tell us "don't carve spheres"
Yes we do, because alot of mappers seem to completely ignore this and it makes a map look like shit no matter how shiny you made it before hand.
People would rather see a nicely detailed video then read this
Yes we do, because alot of mappers seem to completely ignore this and it makes a map look like shit no matter how shiny you made it before hand.
But any mapper who comes here and is too stupid to not notice it would get flamed. I can't imagine not noticing this right away, you'd have to be blind or really lazy to not fix it.
I mention zfighting in the first of my videos, and a few afterwards as well. Any mapper who has used the tool will know that brushes look shit when overlapped. I haven't noticed any maps released here that have zfighting issues.
I haven't noticed any maps released here that have zfighting issues.
I have :) Same as people still using carve. Its become such a taboo no-one even thinks to say don't use it. We need a sticky with mapping rules. Posts like this will get buried and new mappers will continue to come along carved, lag maps with overlapping brushes.
overlapping brushes is as bad as doing drugs you wouldn't do drugs! would you?
Changed my life
So that's what it's called...
I much prefer kung-fu-fighting
I read Z-fighting and was expecting some bizarre glitch where Hammer gets attacked by Super Sayians.
I read Z-fighting and was expecting some bizarre glitch where Hammer gets attacked by Super Sayians.
I But What. [editline]25th March 2012[/editline] Seek help.
Helped me alot, thanks mate!
WHAT DID YOU DO.
So you're just telling us not to overlap brushes? Like any of us couldn't have figured that out.

Great tutorial, don't know what I would do without it. 10/10
